: Opinions Needed for Roof Racks
X-Scott 06-11-2002, 11:13 PM I would like to hear your opinions and/or experiences with roof racks especially for the FJ60's. I plan to go for the full length one which is reasonably strong and light. Obviously, quality counts in my book. So far I have Garvin, Con-Ferr, and Tradesman. Fire away, guys! Thanks!
rogueturtle 06-11-2002, 11:44 PM I decided to go with the ARB for the few hundred over the Garvin. When i called Garvin regarding size choices they referred me to SOR-which was the first major turnoff.
The thing i like best about the ARB is the tight mesh floor. I throw my mtn bike on it all the time and the spd pedals dont go thru the rack and rip up the roof. If you plan on actually using the roof for everything under the sun........and you value your rigs roof- look for a mesh flooring first and foremost.
Secondly is the gutter system which was the major selling point after seeing bent gutters. If you go with anything other than an ARB i would consider 4 roof mounts per side for weight dispersion. With the ARB its 3 and i can jump up and down *200lbs* on the roof rack.
Find someone with an ARB and go look at it as well as others. Seeing em up close really will solidify your decision.
Sloan 06-12-2002, 01:36 AM I believe TLC carries the Tradesman and believe it or not he actually has it for a good price ($500-525). This rack has for sets of feet and the feet are connected by a runner that runs the length of the roof in the gutter for complete support.
Sloan 06-12-2002, 01:39 AM Here we go, you can see the support running inside the gutter. I won't knock the ARB but $800 plus for a roof rack?

What is that up there? A coffin??
Advent Horizon 06-12-2002, 03:05 PM Talk to Mark Whatley, I've seen one of his roof racks for a 40...Apparently they've put more than 700 pounds on one of those racks!
Also, about that mesh floor...Get plywood if you want to put any fabric or tarps up there, the mesh will rip that stuff to shreds.
sarge 06-12-2002, 06:48 PM ARB hands down the best rack! I have one on my 60 "spare tire,
high lift, pull pall bikes boat you name it. it makes the con fern
look like its made out of a close hanger, nice hardware easy to
set up extra strong still cheaper than man-a-fre stuff and cheaper
than custom. kick ass!:smokin:
green73 06-12-2002, 06:58 PM here are a few pix of mine on my 40 built by Mark Whatley. He also does them for 60's. It uses Con-Ferr mounts the rest is custom.

Tracknod 06-12-2002, 07:12 PM Actually,
Hands down... the best rack period, without a doubt has to be the Hannibal Rack. 45 lbs lighter than the ARB and a Max load range of 6k lbs. Not that your ever going to carry 1/5 of that up there. Check them out here... I just saw one in person and all I can say is in-Fawking-credible. Besides only 8 have been sold in the US to date. Check them out here:
http://www.roveraccessories.com/hannibal.htm
Charles, the owner is pretty cool, so give him a shout. But be forwarned... it is a little bit more than the ARB but 45 lbs is ALOT!!!!
BTW... My new Hannibal tent is bad ass!!! Oh the project is going to be sweet!!!!
X-Scott 06-12-2002, 07:48 PM I checked out the Hannibal racks and they look awesome! I don't see any racks made for the FJ60's. Also, they don't come with accessories where I mount mountain bikes and snowboards using Yakima add-ons. Maybe I missed something. By the way, how much is one going to cost me?
J-Bone 06-12-2002, 07:56 PM I was able to make mine, but for a non- FJ ride, but it still was a toyota. The roof mounts were the hardest to get lined up due to my stick welding with old 1/8 rod, getting fancy with angles, etc.
Anyway, the next best solution would be to make your own rack and floor, but buy the roof mounts for company x, Y, Z.
I used 3/4" square tubing and 3/4" 11 guage expanded mesh for the rack and floor. I was also able to add ham and cb antenna mounts etc....

They have racks for 60's and 70's just not listed on the Site and tons of accessories. Charles has tons of stuff and a huge inventory, just give hom a call. He is the Sole distributor for Hannibal in the US, and from what I have seen... and I am sure Henry will back me up, Hannibal is about some of the best full on expedition gear there is. The rack comes in about 200 bucks more than the ARB at just about a grand, but if I had to do my 60 over, this would be a no brainer. The differance between the two is night and day. If I wasn't doing something special with my new project... this would definatly be on it!!!!.

Yeah.... I wasn't sure what the retail on the rack was... but the tent is a Fawking good deal I think. It is just plain bad ass. I know it is going to be warmer than my $900 4 season tent , that is for sure and 15 seconds to set it up... That is just plain sweet. Plus it is as waterproof as a mutha. I have set up too many tents in pouring rain to do it any more. That just makes your whole night miserable. You should see the picts that I can't post :)
Actnjacksn 06-13-2002, 05:50 PM Damn, Damn, and Damn she is hot. Ill stick up for you to dude, congrats.

Unless you have friends in Venezuela or are willing to travel there, you are SOL when it comes to 60Seriesguys rack. Jeff Bryant (Icky) made a copy of it for his diesel HDJ60 after spending an hour with a tape measure on the roof of Henry's truck. HTH

Holy shit, thats a fortune. The South African exchange rate is 10 to 1 right now against the dollar. I guess when I go to Africa this Christmas I will bring one back rather than pay the retail here. Sheesh.

Sloan 06-13-2002, 09:44 PM So they're paying the equivalent to $13,000 over there? Yeah right, that's the price you pay for going through a Range Rover supplier.
