Just picked up my "terrain tamer" knuckle rebuild set for my 1980 bj40.

Includes new seals, bearings and bearing cups, how do i have to get the old bearing cups out? Wack them out wit a BFH or is there a more subtle way?

And how do the shims work, what's the procedure? Do i first have to bolt the knuckle and tierod arm together with only the slimmest shim inbetween and if there is no rubbing, it's ok, and if there is rubbing i should take it apart again and try again with then next size shim?? How do you pro's :flipoff2: do this??

There is a small cut out in the bearing seat that allows you to tap the bearing cup out. Have a look inside & you will see waht I mean. Use a small drift through the opposite bearing and alternatively tap either side of the back of the cup.

Try starting with the same shims that you removed. I did this and the preload worked out at about 5lb - sweeeeet. If you don't remeber how they were set up before, start with the THICKEST shims. Test your preload (rubbing?) with a small spring scale at about 90 degrees to the steering arm.

I am almost finished building my new front axle. It has Martacks, Hilux disks, Multi-hole pinion flange, Grease nipples, and all new gaskets, bearings and seals.

Thanks, did it the way you explained and it worked fine.

Got very lucky this morning, wen't to my 4x4 parts supplier to pick up the knuckle rebuild kit (make is terrain tamer ever heard of that?), and saw he had a Bj60 junker, still had the power steering and the front vented discs!
Immediately told him, I WANT them, he sold to me for a relatively cheap 670 euros (635 US$) for the entire power steering setup (includes all the lines, brakets,...) and brakes (includes everthing, knuckle, flex brake lines,...) !! So next time I'll be cruisin with one finger on the wheel instead of having tu use every bit of strength i have to turn those wheels.
