Here's the deal on my mitsubishi, laugh all you want.
I just installed a new thermostat and flushed the coolant, but the sucker is still getting hot fast. My guage reads red within 3 miles or so at 30-35mph. What are my possible culprits? Radiator, water pump? Ignorance is my specialty. Any help appreciated.

some new thermostats are just bad, check it in a pan of water on the stove.

If it actually heats up that fast, and the sending unit/gauge check out, you may hve trapped air in the system.
With the engine cold, take loose the highest cooling system connection under the hood....This will probably be a heater hose or a connection to the heat for the carb. Fill the radiator, put on the cap, and with the connection loose, not disconnected, but leaking, run the engine until the thermostat opens, letting the bubbles out. Worth a try. Alternatively, drive the truck up your ramps, so that the front is about a foot high, and run/fill with the cap off until the thermostat opens. Don't open the cap while it is hot!
(I would normally assume you would know this, but you DID buy a Mitsibushi!).

cracked head or blown gasket ? impeller broke loose from shaft ?

the only time my mitsu montero (93 3.0) overheated was when the radiator was packed with mud...
id check the fan and fan clutch.. what all did you check????
