Im doing an sas and putting a 305 in my 81 datsun. I got a 700 from an astro van. im just now getting to were i can take littel test drives with it. at first revers had to be nuged along. give it some gas for a seconed and it would start moveing. you could let off and get on it again and it would pull fine. all the fowred gears work fine. well not sure about 4th ant got that fast yet. over the last couple of days revers was getting wores and wores till you got it moveing then ok. well today would not do shit. i jaked it up and in low i could get them to move but not in high. when i instaled this thing i put in a new filter and fluid. the other day when i put on a cooler i noticed the fluid was nasty. is it posable i will get lucky and this is just dirty fluid and need to be flused real good are no revers just means no revers.

i was planning on rebuilding it just not now. wonted to wait till i had the money to put the good stuff in it.

Change the fluid and filter, drain the torque converter too.
Refill and do an op test.
Check your pan when you drain the fluid, an excess of cardboard flakes or metal shavings is bad.

i plan on chaging the fluid the weekend. I pulled the dipstick in the light today and looked at it. not burnt but is black as oil. so maybey that will band aid it for a few months. the forward gears all pull like now tommrow.

Fluid goes black from toasted clutch material and the oil getting hotter than the hubs of Hell. That trans will no doubt start dropping other gears as time goes on.

One of the seals has probably dried and gone hard on the low/rev piston. The trans probably won't have any engine braking in first either. It's toast, just pull it out and overhaul. Wasting your time even trying to change the oil. I've overhauled hundreds of these over the years, it's done don't wast the money on the oil and filter.

x2 on rebuild don't even waste $$$ on filter and oil just do a rebuild now and don't waste time and $$$ on trying to do pointless shit hoping to get it to work. just my .02

I'm willing to bet if you change the fluid, you will lose everything.

if i pull it what is a fair price to have rebuilt? and what are worth while upgrades. I will be running 35s with 4.11s? I have a 305 now but will prbley upgrade to more power in the futher.

You need much more gear if you expect that 700R4 to live on the road. 4.88s minimum.

Reverse in an automatic transmission is the hardest gear to turn becucase the hypoid gear set ( the rear) doenst turn well the opposit direction this is why the line pressure goes boosted in reverse to give the clutches extra holding power to turn the transmission components the opposit direction and the rear. there are a few things that could be causeing your weak reverse
1. the seals in the pistons are leaking bleeding off line pressure
2. the reverse piston actually has a bleed hole in it to let air bleed out of the piston on apply and is supposed to be closed off by the wave plate when it is flattened by the apply but this sometimes doesnt happen exspecially with a leaking piston or a low output pump
3. your pump may not be able to output the pressure needed to boost the line pressure to correctly operate reverse and do the functions explained in #2
4. you may just have clutch failure in the reverse drum or the low reverse clutches
5. your boost valve is for whatever reason non op.
the first step would be to get a set of line pressure guages and see what the static and applied line pressure is it should be around 220 when applied in reverse and around 110 static if the pressure doesnt peak in reverse the you may have a seal leaking if the pressure stays good then you most likeley have a clutch failure either way it is time for a rebuild

well i was going to take yalls advice and just redo this tranny but my step son reminded me that i was going to let him do it. So I already had all the stuff so what the hell. so he did it, and boy was ther shit in the pan. anyway it would do revers if you jacked up the rear. i would take a minuet then run foward stop then run backwards.

I called some shops around her and im look at 800 bucks for a basic rebuild if i take it to them. so i did an online serch and you can seem to good a 700 with some good stuff for around 12 to 15 even seen some for around a grand so i guess that is my best option. when i started talking aobut 9 clutch packs and such they all jumpt to over 2 k hell for that i can call tci

i would stay away from the 800 dollar build those usually end up with a few clutches a band and a rear case bushing not a complete build if you get what i am saying 1500 sounds right for a stock build

Before you install a rebuilt trans-get a can of cooler flush and flush out the lines and cooler from both directions. You may see all kinds of crap including cuttings fly out. Use eye protection. Using a rubber tipped air nozzle is a plus.
