: CJ power steering box alternatives? Not AGR.

I need a replacement for my 1982 CJ power steering box. Does anyone know of a bolt in replacement with the same fittings that would have a faster ratio and could accomodate a larger pitman. I need a short flat pitman that will work with Chevy tie-rod ends on the drag-link.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom your earlier questions (can't remember if on this board or the Off-Road.com board) should have told you that any power pitman arm will fit any power box. As far as faster ratios go for a box out of a GM car. A Camaro or Firebird box will be faster, but stay away from a Z28 or TransAm box. They will be wayyyy too quick. Check out a Wagoneer box also. They have a variable ratio which you may like. Just remember that it has to come from an '80 or newer vehicle to have the same fittings (o-ring) that your lines use.

Just go get a waggy box. Should be a direct swap. A cherokee box should be about the same.

if you want to keep your steering box and quicken up your steering you could install one of these...

2:1 or 1.5:1 steering quickener, I have one for my steering set up, except mine is backwards and is a reducer instead of a quickener;) instead of only 3 1/2 turns stop to stop on my MANUAL steering I get seven turns stop to stop.

Tom, get a box to fit a 85 Jeep J20 Pickup. It will be exactly what AGR sells as a Super box 2. faster ratio steering and a larger bore for more power. AGR are robbing people. If you still want more power I can add hydro assist to that for awesome power.
hope I helped

According to my local parts store computer, the J20 box is the same part# as the G. Wagoneer box. I am going to do a comparison against a CJ box today. The wagoneer box appears to have a slightly different shaft where the steering shaft attaches. Does it have to be modified to work?

Thanks,
Tom

Yes Tom the Wagoneer box and J20 box are going to be the same. The only differences in Saginaw boxes are the ratio, the input shaft size, and the output (power vs manual). The input shaft on the Waggie/J-truck box may be different than the CJ input. Saginaw boxes either have a 3/4" input shaft or 13/16" input (all CJ boxes). If it has the smaller input all you need is a different bell coupler at the bottom of the CJ shaft. Places like Four Wheel Drive Hardware sell them for about $40. Swap it out if you need to and get the box swapped in. You're making this way more difficult than it needs to be and there's nothing in this thread that a search wouldn't have covered.

I've tried to do this same swap, but there's one problem I have. The Wagoneer box is about 4-6 inches longer than the old box, which means my steering shaft is now 4-6 inches too long. Does anyone know how I can go about shortening the steering shaft without cutting it? Is it adjustable? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Sams offroad has a short flat pitman arm. It's like 3/4"-1" flat stock that has the splines cut in it to fit a power box and can be had in either large or small taper for TRE.

A good source for a beefy flat pitman arm is a Chevy Astro van. I have one on my LJ, lots of meat to ream it for a Chevy 1-ton TRE. I got mine at a u-pull yard for $4.

What year/model Astro van? The only one I've found at the yard had some drop.

Good idea on the AGR steering setup. I have the AGR box and super pump on mine (bought it with it on there) and it's the biggest pile of shit ever. I can't wait to throw it in the trash. I'll be going POS or PSC full hydro this fall.

Pretty sure any year 2wd Astro will have that arm. The 4wd vans had a different set up.
