Anybody have a V8 in their XJ? And if so, how do you keep the damn thing cool? Been dealing with cooling for 2 years, and still have not found the perfect way to keep it down on the trail. Does ok on the highway. Thanks:D

i had the same problem. after a few attempts i finally moved the front bumper forward about 4 inches and put a full size gm radiator in front of the grille. well the grille isnt there anymore but you get the idea..

I thought of that, although looks aren't all, I do want to keep the grille. Here's the deal though. I have a Griffin aluminum radiator 2 row, that is 3in. deep. I thought it was going to make the cut. Well, maybe it isn't. It is the second Griffin I have had. Also, I have a flex fan on the pump, and a perma-cool 3000cfm fan on the front o fthe radiator. I do not think that the radiator is the whole problem. What stat are you running? What part number radiator? And what kind of cooling fans do you have set up? You have a fan clutch? Sorry for all the questions, but noone else has V8 XJ's. So when I find someone who has one, I need help. Thanks, any pics?

i had a 21x19 griffin aluminum rad that i used with a small fan mounted on the water pump. but that didnt work, i am using a radiator from a 79 elcamino with a single electric puller fan off of some toyota car. also a 160 thermostat and it will run around 190-200. but when i had the bumper off it woult run 160 down the road and 180 in the woods. but that was because of all the air it could get without the bumper in front of it.

now novak makes a radiator just for this conversion, but i dont know how much it is...

I was over heat free for at least a year but it over heated last trip.

I run a summit racing dual 1in core radiator, I think 27X22in had to remove the steering box. to fit it between the frame rails.

I used to run just a mechanical fan with clutch but no shroud, but now I plan to run an electric ford taurus fan. Im still working on the mounting of that...
I installed a new watter pump.

My coolent also goes throught he propane regulator that cools it off by afew degrees similar to having the heater on.

Timing and fuel air mix can make it run hot.

Interesting. I have a 160 stat, and that exact 21x19 Griffin. The other thing is that I have a good 4-5 inches behind that crossmember Jeep has. I think XJ owners know what I am referring to. I am going to put the radiator in front I think and build a new bumper for it to protect. Also am doing a shackle reversal anyway. Here are a few pics. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x75/ROKCHEV/8.129999.jpg

What's that thing on the front? Looks like the platforms the fishermen arround here use to harpoon Sword Fish.:D
Anyway, I run a Howe # 342A28, which measures 18.5x27.75 over all, and has a core size of 18.5x24.5, for a core frontal area of 453 sq inches. I've read that the minimum core size should equal the cubic inches pluss 50.
I run a 195* thermostat, and the engine runs 190* most of the time, getting no higher than 210* on a long, uphill climb while fully loaded, and in 5th:smokin:
A proper shroud is extremely important to efficiently moving the air through the rad. Mine's home made and appears to work well.
I use the stock truck fan-clutch, with about 1/2 inch clearance between the fan and the rad.
To get my rad in place, I extended the frame rails, and installed a WJ steering box (sets on top of the frame). I didn't change the location of my bumper, nor did I have to mod the grill; however, it's clear to me, that to install an A/C condenser in front of the rad, I'll probably have to move the grill insert out 1/2-inch, or so.

Bubba, do you have any photos of your shroud? I need to build one, and it is getting overly compliacted. Hurts my stupid head.:shaking: I do finance for a living, so when I get home, I am fried. :) Thanks, any advice on the shroud would be helpful.

Here's what I fabbed. As I recall, I used 20ga sheet metal.

Buddy of mine hooked me up with the Oreilly's MASTER RADIATOR CATALOG. Found a GM one that fit close to the measurments I needed. Went to the junkyard and got a Ford Torus Electric fan and did away with the fan and clutch assembly. Use the Radiator hoses for the 91 Chevy pickup. 180deg.
t-stat. never gets over 200.

Triple pass alum radiator for a stock car. $250. With the two speed fans I run them on low just to keep the heat out of the cabin. In the winter I reverse them for heat. I tried everything befor, now even on 100 F days it still barely runs 210.

So I finally ordered a Howe fan shroud yesterday. I will have to fab some of it I know due to the width. I think ya'll know what I mean. I will try to post some pics of the install. As it will be epic, like every other damn piece of crap I change:D. Simple deal, but not that simple. :shaking:

Are these Photos of your Rig?
If so... Is there a Build Thread on your XJ?

Thanks

How did you route your coolant lines? I will be doing a similar setup and am looking for a little input.

Having a fan in front of the radiator does no good, maybe even makes it worse by blocking radiator. Build a shroud like shown or with 2 fans even. Main thing is get air thru the radiator. With the short radiators the things run you could run 2 10" fans maybe and move all kinds air with that.

now i'm sure you have already done the basic lebaron hood vents and you don't have a huge winch and tons of lights blocking all the airflow to your radiator........ so i'll give you my opinion....you can buy a kit that will convert your XJ from having a crank driven fan and an auxiliary electric fan to running 3 electric fans with individual speed controls.....buy it on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JEEP-CHEROKEE-XJ-ELECTRIC-COOLING-FAN-KIT-ADD-MPG-HP_W0QQitemZ110391530564QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_ Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item19b3d91444&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

you can use a 91-92 ford taurus fan.it has a built in fan shroud.they work well in the s 10 v-8 swaps. its what i used with my s-10 swap only had to run it on low till i turned my a/c on for intown driving. and the temp out side was around 95 or so but done great. you might give it a try. and most junk yards have them for cheap
