: squealing pulleys
HaZarD2600 06-12-2002, 10:48 AM well my truck started squealing every time the engine went back down to idle speed. I figured it was the belts. when I got the time a 2 weeks later, I replaced all the belts and it seemed to fix it for the 1st day. then it started up again! not nearly as bad..but it's still there. I figure it's the pulleys. Should I just go to a junk yard for them?
Coop 50 06-12-2002, 11:13 AM There was a previous post about a bearing replacement for the idler pulley. You can get a generic bearing instead of the Toyota part which costs too much. I don't have it with me but I can get it when I go home tonight. I have it because I need a new one.
You had better find out what's squeeling before it seizes up on you. I had a water pump seize up before and luckily I had a knife so I could cut the belt and limp home.
If it is the idler bearing you can pop it out remove the retaining clip pry off the seal and pack if back full of grease...(I used the red stuff)....be carefull when poping out the seal as you want it to re-seat good...I used a very small screwdriver...I did this on 3 pulleys so far and thats all they needed as they were dry as heck...no one thinks to pack em now and then... 1 was really shot so it had to go...:D

good info, but.....no one is going to touch it untill it squels:D why should you? If you can wait till it makes noise then pack it and all is good, then wait:) + it's not a serviceable item, it just happens that you can service it if you try hard enough:D
toy4x4boy 06-12-2002, 08:34 PM OK what idler pulley are you guys talking about? The lower left idler pulley on the front of my 3.0 V6 is making noise (not sqealing) and wobbles around if you grab it (when the engine is not running of course). I took the nut off of it and pulled it apart and put it back on and tightened it as much as I could and it still wobbles and makes noise. Does anyone know what I am refering to?

Thanks OPP's! Can this bearing be purchased at, say, Autozone or wherever other than the dealer?

Cool, thanks!

This is the place where I found the info concerning the fan belt tensioner bearing replacement.
HaZarD2600 06-13-2002, 08:44 AM this is some great info...one question though. do both tensioner pulleys have the same size bearings??
Coop 50 06-13-2002, 11:24 AM I dunno, that thread is for a 22R or RE, you have a 3.0 V6.
HaZarD2600 06-13-2002, 11:27 AM i've got a 22re motor. so are all the bearings the same size?
jaymo 06-13-2002, 01:14 PM The two tensioning pulley bearings are different sizes on the 22RE. One thought to consider. I had similar symptoms. Replaced the belts and within no time the squealing came back. Come to find out that fan tensioning pulley bearing had seized and the belt was glazing over due to the fixed pulley. New bearings from the bearing warehouse and she's smooth as silk.

Thats all true I won't deny it......I did mine when I had other parts off...by the time its squealing its usually to late.....more preventive maintenance than anything else....:D
mikeovegas 06-13-2002, 11:00 PM the squeeling on myine was due to a whooped ass belt that polished the pulley groove shiney. I took some emory and scuffed the groove and replaced the belt, works greay now!

Good info.
Change the belts, repack the tensioner bearings, been doin' it for years. Use a good HD Synthetic grease w/ moly. Alternator bearings like this stuff, too.
RocKrawler 06-14-2002, 08:39 AM WD-40 says it stops squeaks....:rasta:
flimmy 06-14-2002, 01:54 PM Jaymo, did you find a new cab yet ?
