Well this is what we started with.

jeepin jay
08-18-2007, 08:04 PM
And at this point we have a 99 vortex 5.7, T-400, stak 2 speed 4:33:1, D60 in front, d 60 in the rear but we are getting ready to cut the spindles of press on the outters from a front and put in some cromo 35 spline axels for rear steer. Next week we will start making the links from 2x.250 4130 and j joints.Just got the tires and wheels this weekend 42x14.5x16 iroks. Im still stuck if I should go with air shocks or coils. we built the frame then we got the t case and it was to wide so we had to cut and add 3" on both sides still need to grind and weld on gussets.

What are you gonna use if for?

I'd do air shocks for the relative simplicity.

Here are some pics of the progress we made this weekend. Pretty happy the way it turned out but not sure how its going to work being this is the first time we have done something like this. going to put the front in this week.

jeepin jay
08-27-2007, 01:41 PM
I'm gettin ready to start putting the front in I see some rigs with the 4 link and the lowers are pretty much straight (no angle) and the uppers have the angle from the frame to the center. Is that a good way because I can't get the lowers to the center tranny is in the way. Or should I go 3 link with a panhard???

Air shocks. Too much money for coilovers if you're just gonna craw.

jeepin jay
09-19-2007, 04:32 PM
We got the front links in this weekend so while we are waiting for the shocks we put the body on to see how things were going to line up. right know its sitting on 4x4s and is to far back. its going 5" foward and way down. we are going to have about 24 to 26" of frame clearance

Here are some pics from this weekends progress. next we have to finish the cage and tie it in to the frame then mount the rear shocks. I know I put a yj hood and grill on a CJ5 but I needed the space in the longer hood its hard to fit the the shock hoops in when my wheel base is 105". the frist chance I get I'm going to fill in those squares and put in some round head lights:flipoff2:

jeepin jay
09-30-2007, 05:42 PM
This weekend we got the rear shocks in and lifted it to see what it would do the hoist would not go high enough we are going to have to lift it with a fork lift to find the roll over point. We still need to finish the cage and tie the cage to the frame should have that finished up by next weekend.

jeepin jay
09-30-2007, 05:46 PM
On the last set of pics you can see that my grill is not in yet its just sittin there for the pics

Thanks this is the first time I have built something like this. So far it has been a grinding expirence. My son is 11 he is in the pic with my dad and he is learning to weld and use the plasma. I think he is going to be pretty good.

I like this build. I am not a fan of the CJ5 in stock wheelbase form...but I really like them when they are stretched out. Nice work, nothing ultra fancy just good clean solid work. Nice shop BTW.

Looks nice. One thing that kinda worried me: The front shock hoops, are you going to maybe brace them? They look OK if they were just shocks, but since they hold up the vehicle, I can see them moving/tearing from the frame without some extra bracing. Maybe some gusseting down where the vetical tube runs past the frame (looks like its welded to the frame just by the small horizontal piece of tube). I'd gusset it there and run a bar from the left to the right hoop...

Nice start!

What I did is take some 1.5x .250 dom and went through the frame welded that in them took some 1.75x .120 dom slid it over the other dom welded it together the welded my hoops to it. I hope it holds up has alot of $h!t tear up before it breaks I HOPE

That should help it from tearing, but anything to help it from flexing inward? Think shock-tower brace for road cars. Otherwise, they might bend inward like: /___\ over time...

Me and my son built some safety bars that hinge like a door. My son is 11 and I wanted something to protect him from a rock or something hitting him when we flop it. He is getting better at welding and cutting with the plazma. so here are some pics of what we did...

Nice jeep! I was wondering what type of shocks you are running? I have a similar build...My jeep sits 3 feet in the air, has a 4 link setup on the front and a quarter eliptical spring setup in the rear, which I will be changing to a 4 link soon.

ive been thinking about a set for a long time but i was never able to come up with a good way to latch it.

jeepin jay
11-09-2007, 07:12 AM
I'm going to use small shock tabs top and bottom and use a pin with a ball bearing so it dont come when it is on its top. When I get it done I will post some pics

Well I'm finally getting back to work on the 5. This weekend I built saddle and skid for the Howe ram and put in the new hydro pump. Next weekend I hope to have the fire wall re-plated for strenght and install the orb valve and cnc brake assembly . I ordered the radiator, fuel pump, prp seats, and drive lines this weekend so I should have shit to keep me busy for awhile. And don't give me shit about the pics I know:flipoff2: I will get some better pics tomarrow and Im holding the front up with the cherrie picker just in case you were wondering.

Looks great! I'm just starting the exact same build with my 79cj5 and was wondering how a 5 would look stretched. fawking awesome!
What wheelbase did you end up with, and what length air shocks did you go with? I've heard mixed reviews on the air shocks, but you cant beat the price when compared to coils.

Tilt column for full hydro? If so, it needs to be in the 'little things' thread!

I have been waiting a long time for some one to say some thing about the hood and grill. I would have kept the hood and grill but there was not anough room so i was forced to use the 8" longer hood. I do have some updates I will get some pics tomarrow. I'm going to put the air bumps in next weekend and should be able to take it for a test to prarie city the following weekend.
