: Truggy Gear Box Tech Article Posted
Medusa 06-12-2002, 05:52 PM For all you web wheelers with nothing better to do (hey, Woody, you tuned in?:D ) I have posted a writeup of the gearboxes I have been working on for my FJ45 Truggy project. This page includes a description of the NP203/NP205 doubler, a how-to on converting the NP205 to true twin stick shifting capabilities and how to modify the NP205 for an electronic VSS.
The new page can be accessed HERE (http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~jrice/NP205/Doubler.html) or through the drop-down menu on the FJ45 Twins (http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~jrice/cruiser/FJ45.html) page.
Before getting flamed for writing increasingly or excessively long tech reports, I must apologize. Being away from my sweetheart and cruisers during the weekdays leaves me with FAR too much time on my hands:shaking: As always, I will appreciate feedback and constructive comments on ways to improve the information
Big DW 06-12-2002, 09:30 PM Nice SM465...203...205 setup there Jack...very nice work...
Live Wire 06-12-2002, 09:48 PM Very nice work & writeup Jack. Thankyou,Brad.
woody 06-13-2002, 05:30 AM DAMN....I've added new tech links nearly every day for the past 2 weeks....about 15 total new ones....
Thanks Jack!
arndog 06-13-2002, 06:15 AM fantastic ... only problem is now I want one
thanks
arndog
BJ On Roids 06-13-2002, 03:31 PM love your work man
lanmdcruiser r&ps come available up to 6.7:1 ive seen a few vehicles who run them......
maybe you guys dont see them over there, the most common are definitely 4.88 like you said though
apart from that  its really a thing of immense beauty:beer:
hurry up and finish the damn thing!! (the website) us web-wheelers are hanging out waiting for it to be completed....plus i wouldnt mind seeing the finished trucks!

oh yeah and there was one small typo on the above URL:
"therefore elected to remove 10" of the original 12' insert. "
;)
seeing how everything else is so perfect, its sorta out of place!
dog walker 06-13-2002, 08:01 PM lanmdcruiser r&ps come available up to 6.7:1
Hmmm, I'd love to see the pinion gear on that!!
Jeff
Medusa 06-14-2002, 07:39 AM Yeah, you might have a hard time seeing it, Jeff. With the smaller LC ring gear, that head must be really tiny.
Thanks BJ for pointing out that typo -- 12 foot insert, indeed:emb4:
orangefj45 06-14-2002, 09:22 PM DR.Jack has done it again!
when are you going to start teaching the "cruiser" class, maybe this summer ?!:rasta:
keep it up bud! you've got less than 3 months till the 45 run.;)
orangefj45 06-14-2002, 09:28 PM i do have a couple of questions:
1) if you used a late model reluctor gear, would it not be possible to use the later model tail housing and VSS? setup (or does such an animal not exist?)
2) are you going to replace the front output in the 205 with the 32 spline ford unit to gain some additional strength?
cruiserrg 06-15-2002, 08:56 AM Sweet write-up. Been wondering how I was going to add a VSS sensor to mine.
Medusa 06-17-2002, 08:57 AM 1) if you used a late model reluctor gear, would it not be possible to use the later model tail housing and VSS? setup (or does such an animal not exist?)
Good question, Georg. I didn't think such a tail housing existed, but now you have me thinking:confused: I will check into the possibility.
2) are you going to replace the front output in the 205 with the 32 spline ford unit to gain some additional strength?
Not right now, but that might be something that would be useful down the road.
Medusa 06-18-2002, 01:48 PM Okay, here is the update promised in response to OrangeFJ45's question about the latest model NP205 tail housings. Turns out that GM did use an NP205 with an electronic VSS in 1991 model year 1-ton Crew Cab trucks. That was the ONLY application of an NP205 with a VSS. The transfer case and tail housing are essentially impossible to find. Reluctor rings are avaialble as the same size and spline count were used in the later Borg-Warner transfer cases. Essentially, modification of the tail housing as documented in the tech report was the only way to go.

yeah i thought a single thing meant foot and double meant inches, (metric student so i dont really know) and i thought...damn thats gunna be one looooong ride
also with that 6.7 cruiser pinion, ummmm, i thought on your site you said, they dont break at the head and therefore it shouldnt be a problem? cause i thought about running them 6 months ago and they are coarse spline :barf: and small, and when i read they only break at the gear on your site i thought of running them again or was that only with D60s? or did it include landcruisers, cause i was going to buy a set and run them, i could always go back to 4.11s when i bust them...BUT, i cant afford to break a pinion, cause they like to do damage to the ARB carrier on the way through :nuke: :barf: :mad3: :mad2:
