well if its 8 lug then its 3/4 ton the only difference between 1/2 and 3/4 is in the outters or if you end up with a hd 44 with bigger tubes are you sure is a 44 and not a gm 10 bolt and i always thaught that 44s had a 10 bolt cover?

on a side note my truck had the 3/4 ton front and with 39.5's broke em constantly

um.... 10 bolts are all you get with a 44, unless someone drilled some extra holes in it.

GM used both the D44 and Corporate GM 10 Bolt as 3/4 ton, really just a 1/2 ton axle w/ 8lug outers. IIRC they stopped using D44 around '77-79, and started using the 10 bolt. While both have 10 bolts on the diff cover, the 10 bolt is cover is round and symetrical, while the D44 is more "squared off".

D44:
321244

GM 10 bolt:
321245

Some people mistakenly refer to the rear ends in older Chev's with 44 fronts
as 44's - when they are 12 bolts.
