: Good source for chromoly tubing

There has been allot of discussion lately on the board relating to the cost/ benifits ratio of the different types of tubing, so I thought I would share a place that I have found to have the best prices on chromoly tubing so far. Their prices for 4130 chromoly are around, if not less than, some of the prices I have heard thrown around for DOM.

The link is Chassis Shop (http://www.chassisshop.com/cstb.html)

You can get 1 5/8"OD .083wall tubing for $2.81 per foot if buying ~100' like somebody building a buggy would.

Thicker wall gets expensive quick.
1 5/8"OD .120wall is $4.68 per foot in the same ~ 100' quantity.

1 3/4" .083" tubing is $4.13 per foot .120"wall tubing in same OD is $4.84 per foot.

I am still trying to decide what size I want to go with.

I am thinking 1 5/8" tubing would be awesome as space/weight savings would really add up in an all tube buggy. I know chromoly is allot stronger than mild steel, but I am really not sure if 1 5/8" .083 wall is going to be strong enough to live long up close an personal with the rocks. Upgrading to .120 wall makes the price go up fast especially when you start multiplying the per foot price by 100 or so.
Does anyone have any experience with how well thin wall chromoly resists dents/ dings being exposed to rocks?

I expect this chassis to last a looong time, as I cant afford to be replacing it every year.

I am trying to keep the chassis as light as possible to compensate(some) for all of the really heavy other parts that I am using(Big Caddy, Mog,Chevy,Michelin contraption).

I just thought I would share the prices I found, and get some opinions at the same time.

Thanks,
Sean

Thanks for that guys. I am going to check into it this afternoon.
A couple of those locations are close enough that I would consider picking up the tubing myself if shipping is costly.

Thanks again,
Sean

I'm running 1-3/4" .100 wall 4130 on my exo cage. There is NO mild steel comes close to the way the chromoly resists dents. I've flooped the truck at least 1/2 dozen times and I've got one bend and one little dent.

Just because I had it handy at the time, I build my rear control arms out of the same stuff. Eveyone thought I was nuts :). The lowers have got a little bow and now have a couple dents, but considering a year's worth of abuse it's really amazing on less than 1/8th wall tubing!

For durability agains rocks, you can't beat 4130. ;)
