considering swapping to nv4500 from high impact gear. does anyone know for sure if i will need to change the ecm? im told if the computer doesnt see the tranny it will go in a default mode and not run properly. i dont care about codes or check engine lights. tried calling aroun and everyone is "why would you want to do that" or "you cant do that" one junkyard wouldnt even talk to me because changing trannys is illegal and wont pass smog! WTF?
this is for a '00 f350 with powerstroke.

I'm sure you could just put the computer from a manual in it.. but serriously, thats one of the last trannys I'd swap in.. Much easier, and better off just putting a ZF in there..

I tell everyone this who is going to the trouble of changing stuff. If you are going to the trouble of swapping, put a 6 speed in it. The gear spacing is way better than a 5 speed, you won't lose or gain as much rpm when up or down shifting. WAY better if you ever drive in the mountains.

either pursue a ZF 6 spd or ZF 5spd or a NV5600 the nv4500 is fine if you have it but IMHO not worth the money for the upgrade on a truck where there are factory options that can be had from a wrecking yard.
the previous response holds alot of merit about the gear split on a 5spd. another thing to think about is the ZF is a better case design than the nv4500 for the OD gear the ZF holds the shaft and gear where as teh NV4500 hung the 5th gear off the end of the shaft with no support and a nut.
The nv4500 is something i am not opposed to, actually use it in several of my trucks but in a diesel that gear split that a 6spd offers for the middle two gears 3/4 is much better suited for the short power range of a diesel
plus you dont have to mess around with special hydraulics, the factory stuff bolts up

yeah but--- is there any reason why the nv4500 wont live longer than the lousy 4r100? im considering this because it is a almost complete kit and i dont have time to research and find things and wait for shipping, maximum 1 week downtime hopefully. its time for a new tranny and exploring my options, was looking at a ATS stage 3, but really want a manual. trying to keep it less than $5k

if you want a zf-5 there was a 2wd diesel one in the Riverside pick-n-pull on sunday
dont know if it will work with your powerjoke but you could pick it up for around $100 and save some $$
