: Different gearing front and rear

How much of a difference is ok for front and rear gears? Also what if I run a different size tire? I think this is way to much but would it be possible to run a 4.88 front and a 5.12 rear? What about a 5.38 front and a 5.12 rear?

I think that would be too much difference.

What axle are you gonna use that has 4.88's and 5.38's but no 5.13? If you could find a 5.13 that would be perfectly acceptable.

As my truck sits right now, it has 5.13 gears up front and 5.14 out back. Common sense tells me the front will pull a tiny bit (of course, not finished yet).

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that all of the OEM's, at one point or another, sold a 4x4 that had different ratios front and rear. Examples I can think of are 4.09/4.10 or 4.11...3.07 and 3/08...and so on and so forth...

Yup, all the manufacturers had things like 3.50/3.54, 4.09/4.11, etc. Those variances are probably smaller than the rolling radius variances in your tires. Imperceptible.

4.88/5.12 or 5.12/5.38 would not work with same size tires.

For reference, I once had 3.54/3.73 in a Jeep (full width Scout 44 front, narrow track Jeep 44 in back). I was running 38X12.50's on 15X10's up front & 38.5X16's on 15X15's in back. Fronts measured 36" exactly, rears measured 37" exactly. That worked. I also had 4 33X12.50's on 15X8's. When I had those on there, even at low speed there was an audible chirp on the garage floor as the fronts tried to drive away from the rears.

Probably could have said that better - I meant "Original Width" as in not cut down. So, it was significantly wider than the rearend. But no, it wasn't full-width in terms of say a full-size truck. Sorry 'bout that.

I'm running 4.88 in front & 4.86 in the back.

I went with 3.50 rear & 3.55 front for a long time with no problems.:flipoff2:
