: square tubing for tie rod? and drag link
miniyota 06-13-2002, 08:43 AM i was looking at pictures of mudtruck44's truck and he used square tubing on his tie rod and drag link.'
we all know that the square stuff is stronger. has any one else used this with heim joints? maybe you could post some sweet pictures! thanks
How did he thread the ends? Did he weld in somr round and tap it or what?
Maybe a brain fart but seems like a lot of trouble to get a threaded end in there....

patooyee 06-13-2002, 09:50 AM sceep, it's OK to be proud of your Prince Albert, but do you have to show everyone the pic? :flipoff2:

uhm? PA? Are you asking for pics of me cack? i see no PA here?:flipoff2:
miniyota 06-13-2002, 10:58 AM uhmmm they use the same inserts you use when you make them with round tube. and just weld them in. everything else is square on my truck might as well.

A prince Albert is down south is a term used to refer to tongue piercings on men since we assume that the reason you got it was to suck on other boys Prince Alberts...
As for the welded nut deal... Just dosent seem like a strong option to me. To be able to get a good sized nut you would have to run some excessivly large tubing to be able to not only fit the nut but also have some strength. I guess maybe some thinck 2x2 would work but why not just thread some round tubing??? Seems easier but to each his own:D
willymutt 06-13-2002, 12:45 PM It isn't a nut welded in there. They make special weld-in inserts for heim joints. They are usually used on all high quality rod ends on race trucks.

mytzlflick 06-13-2002, 12:48 PM square tube is stronger? news to me I always thought round was stronger overall? seems to me if square was stronger it would be used in rollcages instead of round?
miniyota 06-13-2002, 12:55 PM do a search on tubing square vs. round
it has been argued and argued and round is prettier and thats why everyone uses it!:D
willymutt 06-13-2002, 12:56 PM You need to use some eliptical. We did some calcs on it and it is a bit stronger than round.

we got tired of paying the $$$ for the inserts so we've been buying double length nuts from the spring and suspension place. they use the double length nuts for u-bolts. :D works great. little bit bigger across the corners than the inserts, but thats what the lathe is for isnt it?
Gordon 06-13-2002, 04:12 PM Here is one example I calculated. if you have some 2x2X.120 wall square tubing and some 2X.120wal round tubing the square is 27% heavier and 27% stronger in tension but only 17% stronger in bending.
since on something like a tie rod you don't want it to bend or buckle instead of switching to square tubing you could just go to larger diameter/ thicker round tubing, if you are trying to keep weight to a minimum and strength maximum. But If you are not too worried about weight the local steel yard is more likely to have .25" + wall thickness stuff in square tube. I think this is probably why we see a lot of solid and square tie rods and suspension links.
You can get thinwall 4130 square and rect tubing but if you want anything other than 1010 in thickwall square tubing I don't know where to find it.

No . . . I was refering to how, under your sig, there appears to be a picture of a pierced penis with pubic hair underneath it, but I guess it turns out that it's just your face. :) No offense intended, just a stupid joke that no one seemed to understand. :D

SpineTx 06-13-2002, 07:16 PM Use a piece of 1/4" 2"x3" square tubing, then get a piece of 2" x 1/2" bar stock, cut at a 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" size, kind of tough but then drill and thread for your hime joint, and slide the bar stock into the square tubing flush and weld the heck out of it, kind of heavy but unbendable, or course you want the 3" inch side of the tubing to run vertically for rigidity
High5 06-14-2002, 06:53 AM when i boght the threaded inserts for my tie rod when i converted to full hydraulic i used square. 1.5"x1/4" it works great. actually it is kinda hard to tell it is square unless you look close. the corners on the square tube is rounded off.
