Interior, do you see racecars with exterior cages? They are safer.

Yea but i don't see a 22re doing 125+mph on the trails. :flipoff2:
I do have a interior cage though. Even though the head room suck big time with a interior cage.

Interior = save the occupants, can easily X brace, less wind resistance if freeway driven.

Exterior = Save teh occupants and vehicle, harder to build it strong, more wind resistanace, functional - but not pretty.

I am leading towards the interior cage but does height matter cause i am 6foot 1

I think race cars don't have cages for wind resistance, that and they are tube frames with a body rivited on.

I think he hit this one on the head especially a 4runner a truck is alot easier to make a strong cage. Unless you want to cut your body somewhat to build a X then go internal cage with maybe some good bumpers and sliders. But I would have to say they are kinda neat looking, they get so many looks from people but I guess thats all an opinion.....

The reason you don't see racecars with exo-cages is that they are not meant to rollover and then keep racing. An inner-cage is typically more structurally stable than an exo-cage, but not always. Exo-cages can be just as safe, if built correctly.

Exo-cage is the way to go....with an inner-cage, once you rollover, you'll probably break your front pilliars as well as some glass....you'll probably have severe body damage....it will never be water tight again. With an exo, you can rollover many times with little consequence.

Exo cage protect you and your vehicle but they often look bad from the outside - so some people prefer the interior cage to protect them but not the vehicle.

An exo cage is not desired in race or high speed applications because it creates drag or wind resistance.

Either one can be made strong enough to protect you.

are you serious? how about wind resistance :flipoff2:

i'd go exo, it is worth the extra work and idk about you but i think it looks better.. think of it, less money down the road!

I am 6'5'' and caged my Ranger and had every bit as much headroom as I started with, with the exeption ot the middle bar, If you build the halo Tight and tie the cage into the A and B pillars its like Its not there at all , door bars are there but they are a must. It honestly is about who you choose to build your cage, my cage cost $7500 front to back, without any shock mounts, It was not cheap but the new owner has had it over twice. no problems. if its the body you are worried about and dont want to hurt it go exo.

Belive it or not my cage was cheap, H&M motorsports built a Prerunner for my friend, The due bill was 90K . It is not unusual to see a 100k prerunner. so why is a $7500 cage suprising Labor @ $70 hr x 65 hrs = $4550 + $2950 + in Cromoly materials, For a Tig welded Score Tagged Cage. I think for what I paid it was a good deal.......

SOME OF US ARE JUST POOR BOY'S IN A RICH MAN SPORT
LEARN TO DRIVE BETTER
Exo can be built cheaper, not as tech as tight bends to max out cab room with the interior.
If you freeway drive or it's your DD you want a interior, less drag=MPG's
If you wanna drive wreckless and not care about a rollover an Exo may save your cab pillars. keep water tight and no worries about changein out the cage.
If the Exo isn't built or welded right your exo can push into the body smash pillars anyways.

For 7500 I could buy all my own equipment and do it myself. To each his own though. Some people wouldnt be willing to take on that task. As long as your happy then thats all that matters.

you never said if it was DD though. my gf's dad's truck has an interior and i feel like im gonna hit my head every time (and i have more than once) and i just dont like it. i also do like the look of a well planned exo, but then i guess its back to the personal preference deal. and it will save sheet metal, no doubt about that.

I personally like exo cages for crawling, I find that if I am not thinking " Oh crap there goes my fender" I can concentrate on picking the right line. Of the Exo's I have built for people only one has had significant damage, but he rolled several times down about a 100 ft hill and when he took it he was supposed to bring it back for final gusseting... he never did! Here an example of what is my opinion a good Exo cage.

Also it is possible to have a Exo cage with interior X bracing and not cut the crap out of your vehicle

On second thought i will do an exo cage just a basic one around the cab and front fenders but thanks everyone for the suggestions
