: Torque converter?
AKJeepGirl2 06-13-2002, 10:51 AM I am getting a 700R4 and I want to put an electric lock up torque converter in it and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good one? I have a 98 TJ and I was also wondering if anyone has any pics of good shifter installed. I would really like to get a rachet shifter but I have heard they are a pain in the A$$ off-road. Just looking for suggestions!! Thanks guys:angel:
Ultim8kaos 06-13-2002, 11:04 AM I would try calling TCI for the converter. I trust their products. You can also try Art Carr as their stuff is excellent quality also.
I run a Hurst Quarter stick in my rig and the ratchet shifters ARE a PITA when you want reverse quickly, other than that they work just fine and allow options for location. I don't have any pics of mine but it is mounted on the cage between the seats. I can get you a pic later this afternoon if you still want one. :D
AKJeepGirl2 06-13-2002, 11:14 AM A pic would be great thanks!
StinkBug 06-13-2002, 12:50 PM i got my TC with my 700 from bowtie overdrives. think it was like $150. i'm runnin a cheap B&M shifter and its OK. does the job, could be better, could be worse. overall i'm happy with it and it was cheap and easy to install.

willymutt 06-13-2002, 02:02 PM As far as shifters go, I have a hammer shifter that works great. It works as a regular shifter normally, and as a hammer shifter when you want.

Ultim8kaos 06-13-2002, 03:34 PM As promised Jeepgirl!
Ultim8kaos 06-13-2002, 03:35 PM One more. :D
AKJeepGirl2 06-13-2002, 05:59 PM thanks for the pics...
elf_cruiser 06-13-2002, 07:52 PM Automatics are for girls that can't work a stick...
reddwarf 06-13-2002, 10:53 PM uhh, don't all 700's use a lockup convertor?
AKJeepGirl2 06-13-2002, 10:55 PM whatever elf at least I am not running around on 33" boggers! hehe... thats not nice anyway!! and I can drive a stick just as well as an automatic...:smokin:
elf_cruiser 06-14-2002, 07:53 AM Ashley - you only have 1 more week to make fun of my tires, so get it out of your system... And last time you tried to drive my truck, it didn't seem to work out so well. BTW, hows that D30 holding up????????????????????:flipoff2:
YellowSub1962 06-14-2002, 08:30 AM I'm running a West Coast Converters custom converter in mine. They are right down the street from me, build it tomy engine specs, and I usually get deals from them, but it's still $300 bucks:eek:
just make sure whichever one you go with has HD bearings, NOT bushings...and is furnace brazed (most, if not all are these days)...a HD pump is a good idea too..
as for shifters, I'm a diehard B&M kinda guy, but I WOULD NOT recommend one for a 4 speed...they suck and I can't wait to get rid of mine...
:usa:
AKJeepGirl2 06-14-2002, 10:21 AM ELF- I know that I only have one more week to make fun of your tires and that is why I had to do it! By the way your truck is wierd to drive anyway!! not that I can't drive it just not used to it :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: And you only have a couple more weeks to make fun of my D30 becasue after that I will drive over it many times becasue I hate it so much! :mad3: :jeep2:
AKJeepGirl2 06-14-2002, 10:26 AM yellowsub - do you know how I could get ahold of West Coast converters...I tried to look them up but couldn't find there number or anything....thanks !!;)
YellowSub1962 06-14-2002, 10:43 AM try 805-527-4647 and ask for Andre`
You could try to tell him I sent you (Peter with the Yellow Willys Wagon) but I'm not sure he'll remember me, it's been a couple years :)
:usa:
AKJeepGirl2 06-14-2002, 11:12 AM thanks a bunch:)
jeeper111 06-14-2002, 03:22 PM what she wants to know is where to get a torque converter that locks when you hit a switch? It should act like a regular lock up converter with about a 1000 rpm stall but should be able to be manually locked with a switch from the dash. do any of you know anything about these converters?
YellowSub1962 06-14-2002, 04:41 PM Mine's a lock up, but only in 4th gear, and I have it wired to a switch on the dash I use for a couple RPM gain on hills and such..... I don't think you'd want to lock it up in all the gears, though I've heard of this before....If west coast can't do it, then I'm out of suggestions :(
:usa:
KAcrawler 06-14-2002, 11:16 PM i think she wants the lock up option for the trial so she can get some compression braking and it would be nice to have on the road for driveability
orbitcat 06-14-2002, 11:35 PM I installed a 700-R4 in my '99 TJ. I wired it to the stock Jeep computer. I haven't had a chance to fully test it since I needed to change the speedo gear in my T/C. The Jeep computer uses engine temp, vehicle speed and throttle position to lock up the converter. I don't see why it won't work just fine.
As far as shifters, I used the Lokar and I'm happy with it so far. I don't have a current picture of it, but here is one while I was working on it.
AKJeepGirl2 06-15-2002, 04:31 PM Yeah I do want it for compression braking and for the option to lock it up when I want it.
orbitcat 06-15-2002, 07:24 PM I'm adding an over-ride switch on my dash so I can lock up the converter on the trail when I want. Mainly for compression braking.
FYRMAN 06-15-2002, 11:15 PM What would be wrong with just splicing into the stock harness?
Brutpwr 06-16-2002, 02:25 AM Just get a HD quality made low stall converter from one of the major companies. I had bought a high stall originally thinking the lock up part would make up for the high stall. Well I had terriffic out of the hole performance but everytime I floored it the rpms would jump up a bunch especially when towing and all I that would do with 450HP was create a bunch of heat in the transmission. Also when coasting down a hill I would have better compression breaking in third gear than if I downshifted to second because the clutch would unlock in second! My low stall (lower than stock) converter cured all that plus I could do smoke the tires at 1300 rpm!

That's what I'm saying !
Brutpwr 06-16-2002, 10:13 AM That reminds me of the high horsepower VW sandrails that would occasionally show up. Man those are fast off the line. The engine in back gives you great traction and/or wheelies.
Jason :)
elf_cruiser 06-16-2002, 12:04 PM Hey Ashley, I think that splicing into the stock harness and wiring a switch is the best way to go. A low-stall converter will be a bitch when rockcrawling, even if it works well on the road, who cares???
Orbitcat - we need some details about splicing into the stock harness, what color codes on the wires?? will it lock up in any gear, or just 4th?? If it only locks in 4th it's a waste of time, it needs to lock up under any situation...
thanks!
orbitcat 06-16-2002, 01:09 PM I think on the Stock Jeep auto, it only locks up in third gear. The clutch will engage in third after 35 mph with light throttle. It unlocks in heavy throttle for acceleration. The computer uses vehicle speed as one of the inputs for the lockup, so if you are not going over 35, then it wouldn't lock up.
That's why I'm adding in the over ride switch. There is a harness down by the stock manual tranny that is not used. It is a two pin round plug with a metal keeper. It has a cap over it if not used. There is a red with light green tracer that is the 12V from the ignition ST-RUN circuit. There is a Oragne with light green tracer that is the ground output from the computer. I cut off the plug and spliced in the plug for the 700-R4.
I figure this will work fine for driving to and from the trail. I am adding in a small switch on the dash that sends a ground to the orange with light green tracer wire for driver controlled lockup.
HTH
jeeper111 06-16-2002, 07:04 PM does this mean that the converter will function normally when you have not manually engaged it? Why do you say that it is only good fro driving to and from the trail or could you use this in a daily driver? We are going to put a 1200 stall converter in this 700R4.
orbitcat 06-16-2002, 08:02 PM I guess what I'm trying to say is that it will work normally when the over-ride switch is not engaged. Typically, a standard torque converter does not lock up under thirty mph.
I can engage the clutch on the trail by flipping the switch when the computer would not normally have it engaged. You wouldn't want to or need to flip the switch while driving on the highways, the computer will lock it up during normal driving when it gets the correct inputs from the sensors.
The over-ride switch wires in parallel with the output from the computer.
AKJeepGirl2 06-17-2002, 12:16 AM thanx for the info:) :)
Rock Toy 06-17-2002, 08:04 AM For the shifter, investigate the ART CARR shifters. They are probably the finest you canget your hands on. I think Grady carries (or can get) them. His number is 916-638-5843 or you can check out his web-site at Grady's Extreme (http://www.gradysoffroad.com/welcome.html)
Moab Austin 06-18-2002, 10:45 PM I think what jeeper and Celery girl are saying is she wants to be able to have decent hold back with a 1200 stall but can still have some motor RPM to work with so it isn't "bogged down" but then have the option to lock it up for even better hold back for downhills....
this is also exactaly what I want to..
I think Orbicats Idea will work to, wnyone elsse see any problems we forgot?
I wanna run a 12-1300 stall and a selectable lockup switch!
jeeper111 06-18-2002, 11:03 PM exactly what we are going to do! I am finally starting to understand these weeny auto trannies. Granny four speeds rule!!!:smokin:
elf_cruiser 06-19-2002, 10:33 AM "CELERY GIRL" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
AKJeepGirl2 06-19-2002, 05:51 PM HaHa REAL FUNNY Austin!! You know that Moab celery is the sh*t!:grinpimp:

AKJeepGirl2 06-20-2002, 04:29 PM Rock Toy That looks really sweet...:D ;)
orbitcat 07-06-2002, 12:45 PM Didn't know if you still needed this, but here is a side view of what the Lokar shifter looks like.
orbitcat 07-06-2002, 12:47 PM Here is a top view. Notice the Tranny temp gauge on the left of the console and the shift indicator in the middle. Shifter is a 16" units.
AKJeepGirl2 07-08-2002, 11:43 AM hey thanks for the pics, I appreciate it !! Looks really good!:D
elf_cruiser 07-08-2002, 12:44 PM I say get the LOKAR, that thing looks schaweet!
AKJeepGirl2 07-08-2002, 10:43 PM yeah I know it looks good, I am ordering one tommorrow!:D :D
AKJeepGirl2 07-10-2002, 04:53 PM Hey orbitcat what length is your shifter??? which type is it, how much did you pay for it, and where did you get it, I figure it is easier to just ask you than to measure it all out! :) :)

RokHeep 07-10-2002, 06:22 PM Wow! You're Jeep is looking NICE! Bring it up sometime! :) :D
orbitcat 07-15-2002, 09:30 PM In working with the lock up over-ride switch, I found that it does not lock up in first gear. It will only lock up in 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. The transmission is not designed to lock up in 1st even if the solenoid is engaged.
That doesn't mean it is impossible. It just means I haven't figured it out yet. And, it may be more trouble then it is worth. I am going to continue to work on mine, but I am going to try it without and see if it has enough engine braking.
If you have low gears in the transfer case and axle, you might not need the over-ride. Your truck will be geard low enough that the torque converter will slip very little because of the torque multiplication.
On the other hand, the stock computer does work fine for locking it up. It wires like we discussed before. Hope I didn't cause you any exrta work.
