we use NOS for our diesels also, in fact it gave me an 226 hp increase to top out at 676 hp--of course you need to have some mega injectors to get that kind of hp---propane works to but not to this extent--chris

if u change injectors does that mean ur run nitros full time now?

I dont know how nitros works obvioulsy

Hey Chris,

I see you're hanging out on this board too.....

Changing injectors will allow you to fuel more. The nitrous is used only when "needed." Propane is pretty old news...

Im new to diesel so that makes it new to me.. besides... breathing is old news too.... yet it is still rather effective!

Nitrous Oxide is two nitrogen atoms and one oxygen. It flows into the manifold in liquid form and is very cold. This cools intake temerature and that helps make power. This is one way nitrous helps.

The real reason though that it helps make power is that in the combustion process, the nitrous gets heated above 575 deg. F at which it releases the oxygen atom. The extra oxygen allows the combustion process to speed up, and that allows you to put more fuel in the cyl's for more power.

Nitrous doesn't "burn" or "make the power". The burning of the extra fuel makes the power. The nirous just makes it possible to burn the fuel faster so that more combustion occurs in the same time period.

Good simple explanation thanx.

Now with large injectors though does not ur MPG plumit. Oh and mine is a turbo diesel, and a much older engine... 70's.. vintage Im sure. I have not taken delivery of it yet.. so I dont know for sure if it has injectors or throttle body.

I know.. sounds crazy... Ive never seen it, yet I bought it. When its in Belgium when u find it u either pass it by cause u cant inspect it, or take the risk of buying it.

Guess that makes me a dare devil... bwwwwwhahahaha

Oxygen by it self works much better however it works so good that you would have excess temps almost instantly, above the melting point of aluminum and steel. Nitrous oxide is used to retard this acceleration. NOS is liquid in its compressed state. however as it inters the atmosphere it becomes gas. As stated by reddwarf it has to be heated to seperate the nitrogen and the oxygen, this is your retardation factor, since free oxygen is instantly availble for combustion.

NOS can only be used for short bursts, since the cyl wall and piston cannot handle the temps for very long.

The problem with the diesel is you will over rev very quickly and it isnt a good idea to over rev diesels. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

You have injectors. All diesel do. diesel burns under high pressure without a spark. It is injected just when the piston is to reach the top. Otherwise, the engine wouldn't work that well I assume...:D
(I mean, if you compress air + diesel fuel ... :nuke: and you'd be trying to turn the crank conterstoke...

(Or was this understandable ?)

hey guys, i just bought a 99 F250 powerstroke. This thread got off-topic quick, but i wanted to know more about propane injection. More specifically -

how much does it cost?
how big of a tank do you need?
what kind of power/mileage increase can i expect?
where is a good place to buy a kit?
is it fairly easy to install?
will it void my warranty?(sorry lame ?, but i have never owned anything with a warranty before...)

-Thanks!

there are quite a few guys on www.ford-diesel.com that have done it, i'm sure they can help you. I don't know for sure but i'd guess that it definitely will void the warranty, but how much of a warranty do you have left on a 99? Once my warranty is done (i have an 02 PSD) i want to convert it and my bronco to propane, i think that would be pretty convenient.

i still have 14k miles until the warranty is up, so i will definitely wait until then to do it...

The Propane Injection is not a stand alone fuel supply. You Dont necessarily convert to it, you ad it on.

The Bronco will have diesel in order to gain the hp increase Gas to lp sucks, it'll be a dog.

Most kits on the market can be taken off in about an hour. They would have to prove that you had it on.

I run the Powershot 2000 on mine. I love it. Makes the duramax guys jaws drop!. I get about 22 Mpg with it on Towing!!!

Less in the mtn.s and when my foots in it:)

D, i am looking at the Powershot 2000 kit, also. What did you use for a tank? How much power gain would you est. 50, 75hp??

thanks for the info!

Do you run the propane full time along with the diesel or only on hills etc?

Most of the PSD guys at the last dyno days in Dallas, TX has propane. They use regular propane tanks used for a gas grill.

I guess with the PSD guys you'll always have enough propane for BBQ....

My Cummins don't need any propane for power.... Some larger injectors and a fueling box is all I need.

Yes he does. It's a completely different concept though. He has a gasoline engine converted to run entirely on propane alone. Propane on a diesel is not a conversion. It is a supplement to the diesel fuel. It slows the burn of the diesel fuel so that it burns more completely, giving you more power. The propane is triggered by a switch on the dash, has a regulator, and is typically injected into the air intake prior to entering the cylinders.

www.performancediesel.net this guy has been running propane for a few years on his diesel and knows it all--you inject propane right behind the air filter---you activate it off a switch in the cab but use a HOBBS switch to bring it on at a pre -determined boost---you can blow a head gasket if you push too much in the ol system so beware---you use a regulator also and the amount of propane is determined by the line size from regulator to air intake-I haven't run it, but do have everything but the tank in my garage---if you want to buy a system talk to Nowel at the above web site---chris
