: CA Seatbelt Laws

Anyone know if it's legal to take out the OEM lap and shoulder belts and just run lap belts? First, I assume not and that's the way it is. Second, I don't believe the Simpson belts I have are DOT legal. Assuming I could find DOT legal belts is this possible? Or am I dreaming?

The reason I ask: I'm about to tear out my cage and build a new one. I'd rather not add the attachment points if I don't need to.

Assuming I do need to keep the lap and shoulder belts, anyone know a source for the weld in threaded inserts? Can't find them on A&A's site.

BTW - this is one thing I'm not willing to risk. Seatbelt laws are enforced by EVERYONE.

I doubt it....I got a seat belt ticket from a CHP for "not properly wearing my seat belt" I had the fawkin' thing on but the shoulder strap was under my arm instead of over it. Argued with him for a while....but all I managed to do was piss him off with some smart ass remarks and have him threaten to arrest me.

Ive always been told that you have to have what ever your vehicle was originally equiped with, be it nothing or lap or lap and shoulder. Sucks but thats just one of the joys of living in Cali.

Unless you Jeep was built prior to 1962 then you have to have seatbelts. You will need to have the same type of seatbelts that came with your Jeep. ie if it came with lap belts only then thats what you need. I would be less concerened with DOT regs as long as you have seatbelts that re of the same type that came from the factory. 27315cvc:beer:

Huh?

I pulled my OE shoulder belt, and stuck a Simpson lap only in it's place.
The two times I've been pulled over since (wasn't pulled for seatbelt violation), both cops got an eyefull of my Simpson belt; neither said a word about it.

YMMV

I think they'll cut you some slack if you upgrade, lap to shoulder, should to 4-point......

Paul,

you need a shoulder belt to keep your face from smashing into the air bag legal or not.

I doubt its a Caifornia l Vehicle Code issue, but might be a Fed Safety item, and CA just has a statement (IIRC) that says you can't undo a fed safety issue (this is where/how they ding you on the 3rd brake lite, BTDT.

I assume you have been here already

It's a ZJ, not an XJ, Fawker. :flipoff2:

But I'll concede your point, 'ceptin for those coppers that'll pull you over for not seeing the shoulder strap.

This is true. I had a 55 VW that didn't come with seat belts and I didn't have to have them. Got pulled over a lot and never once did I get a seat belt ticket. So I would have to say that you are going to need the shoulder strap or better they never seem to mind if you make it better.
