: Need a Temperature Sensor

I have a 96 Ram w/ 5.9L Magnum. I want to add an electric fan, but want a sensor to turn it on/off. Problem - Can't find a spot on that engine to screw a sensor in to, the radiator doesn't have anyplace either.

do you guys know of a plug somewhere on the intake I haven't seen one, but doesn't mean it isn't there. (The thermostat housing sensor hole is in use from the factory)

Is there a sensor out there that can plug inline with the radiator output? A "shucks" available part would be great to get this working, but I'll settle for mailorder at this point if I have to.

I use a "probe" type sensor that goes in the upper radiator hose. I think its made by perma-cool...I'll try to find it for you...

how do you seal it so it doesn't leak? Having never seen one, I envision a piece of metal jammed through a radiator hose. hehe

I can't find it, but I got it from PAW ( www.pawengineparts.com ) but their website sucks, I just go to the warehouse and pick up what I need...call them and see if they still carry it. It's adjustable, and has a probe that goes inside the radiatior hose (NOT through the fins). I think it's made by flex-a-lite, or Hayden..

I've also used the Derale unit in the past, but it's the "fin probe", it's adjustable and epoxy sealed though...

It's a little probe thingy attaches to a tiny copper tube that goes to the control (the tube is about 1/16"dia). You actually bend it into a horseshoe shape around your upper radiator port so that the probe is "suspended" inside the radiator hole. It comes with a little rubber thingy that you lay under the tubing. The rubber thiongy has a notch in it the tubing lays in. You put 2 wraps of tape around it and slide the hose on and tighten it normally....

Kinda hard to explain without seeing it though....

I've been running one for the last 3 or 4 years and no problems, though one thing seems to be ritualistic.... The hose blows off after installing it for the first time, everytime I put it together... so just fill it up with plain water for the first 500 or so miles (and carry water)...Last time I got all the way to TDS (225miles) and wheeled the first day before it blew....I think what happenes is the glue in the tape has to heat up and cool down a lot or has to get to a certain temperature before it "stabilizes"... maybe tightening it up every 20 miles or so for the first hundred would eliminate this? I'm just lazy, and "think I've got it perfect this time" every time I do it :D

nevermind, I followed the properties of the pic , and did a little searching....BTW, I paid like $40 for mine when I got it... so it's come down a lot since then :)

Thanks... I'll go looking for a local supplier that has one today.

www.painlesswiring.com sells the kit to put a probe through the fins in your radiator............temp controlled on/off. Use it on my '79K5 w/TPI406 motor with an IROC single fan, keeps it cool.

It is simpler than the version you see above, and less $$.

Less than $25? Nothing in Painless is really less than $25. I'm trying to find prices, but of course.. their website doesn't sho any. grr....

(Not that I am going to get Painless, its more of a principle to not buy from them.)

I have the same truck with the same motor, It runs cool all the time even pulling my trailer, up a hill with the air on when it's 90+ degrees outside. Why would you want more cooling?
