Can anyone tell me if a detroit from a ttb44 will work in a 78 d44. both ar 30 spline and both have the same gear split but I don't know if they will work

that last link is the coolest one, I just noticed the bottom tabs give an exploded image and part numbers for every piece of the locker

A 44 is a 44

Carrier will interchange. Carrier bearings will not ( taper is different ), so you must use carrier bearings for the housing the differential is being used in.
