I went to Panama City Beach a few weeks ago with my girl. We chartered a boat to do a little deep sea bottom fishing. We went out, she enjoyed it, and I didn't barf. Perfect trip IMO. We end up really getting along with one of the other guys on the boat, and that evening we charter the same boat to go shark fishing. According to the captain, this is what he is best at, and he gave us a pretty good deal, so why the hell not.

We anchor about 3 miles off the beach, and we could actually still see the lights and people walking in and out of Club La Vela (thats how close we were).

The captain uses 55 gallon trash bags as floats and a 10lb bonita as bait on a hook the size of my hand, and this is the result...

The shark is 8 feet and 1 inch long and guessing it weighted around 280 - 300 lbs. It had a 45 inch girth!

The guy who we chartered the boat with wanted to take some meat home for shark steaks and the captain took the rest home (we arn't big fish eaters :barf: ) Well, it turns out, this fish is an all tackle world record for a nurse shark. Since we didn't get it weighed, it doesn't count. Oh well.

Now for a few more pictures...

Cool pics. I believe in catch and release....right into the frying pan. :D That's cool that your girl caught the big one. That makes it easier to recruit for future trips... :D

So you just go fishing to kill fish? You don't even eat what you catch?

Congrats.

Nope, I can't stand to eat fish, but the others on the tip took the fish to eat. The red snapper in the first picture, we caught on a morning charter and there were 4 other people on it with us. We told them beforehand that we did not want the fish, and they were welcome to them. If they didn't want them, then we were going to throw them back. But, they wanted the fish, so they got them.

We did keep one and had a local fish market cook it up for my girl. She said it was awsome.

The shark was also eaten and a replica mount is being made of it. Talk about f'in expensive.
