Saw a thing at the dealer today and the parts guy said it could be retroed onto my cummins. Anyone done it? Cost? Another contractor on one of my jobs has tha factory exhaust brake on his wife's truck and says it's the shit.

Pac Brake is a better option.

It will pay for itself in two brake jobs. Most guys find themselves using the brake even when they aren't towing.

My Pacbrake was about half that.
Install was easy.
Best mod I have done to my truck. (The only other mod was Line-X)
You running a manual trans?
The dealer does not like brakes on pre 06 automatics. If you trans is built I would think it would be fine.

Pac Brake has updates for the pre 06 with auto. I don't know what they did to correct for what issue.

Auto, waiting to build it till it craps out. So how does it work, is it tapped into the brake pedal at all, or is it an on/off switch?

my pac brake was just over $700 for my 12v three years ago. one of the best mods for towing. Saves brakes a ton. Install is easy. remove the downturn elbow replace with pac-brake. Use t that is included in the kit to get access to the vacuum neccessary to run the brake. The wiring is all included and very straight forward. need a power and ground and then you have a switch mounted to activate the brake and a safety switch that you can install under the accellerator so you don't hit the gas and the brake at the same time.
Mine was going into a custom application (84 chevy with a cummins) so I didn't use the gas safety switch I just made sure not to hit the gas with the brake engaged.

So how does it work, is it tapped into the brake pedal at all, or is it an on/off switch?
Tapped into several different engine inputs. Throttle position, egr, cruise, etc... Also has an on/off switch so you can turn it off on slick roads. When you let off of the go pedal, it takes over and slows you to a preset mph. This is so the brake doesn't kill the engine. Service brakes slow the truck to a stop.
Has it's own air compressor and air tank to supply the air the work the brake.
Instructions are very easy to read, tells you which color wires to tap into, where and how to mount things... They have taken the guess work out of it.

hmm, I'll have to look into it some more and see if I can find a better price. I've got good trailer brakes, but going downhill makes me miss the grade braking in my dmax.

Here's the link to Jacobs. The 5.9 can't use an engine brake so it just a potato, but it's a Jacobs Potato®
;)
The new exhaust brake utilizes updated powertrain software to maximize torque converter lock-up performance and to protect the Ram's 48RE four speed automatic transmission.
This results in up to 170 retarding horsepower
