Got my T18/D20 in
A stock XJ front shaft is close. It'll bolt in, but it is compressed about 1/2" further than normal. I think I've got 1/2-3/4" of compression room.
What bad could happen if I run out of driveshaft compression?

If your driveshaft bottoms out, it can hurt your t-case. You need to flex out your rig completely and measure from yoke to yoke. If you have short arms with a lift, the shaft may actually extend since the axle will travel in a forward arc. Do yourself a favor and check it before you trash your case.
Travis..
edit: the forward arc is assuming you are working on an XJ, and not just using and XJ shaft in something else.

79 CJ5 with 2.5 BDS lift springs, otherwise stock.
Yeah, trying to be cheap will probably just end up costing me more money some how.
How would I check compression? Just ratchet strap the suspension down?

You need to find something to flex it out on. A forklift, hydraulic lift, or even just drive it up on something. You will never get it to its limit unless it is the full vehicle weight compressing it. You'll want to check full compression and full droop. Is it shackle reverse, or stock configuration?
