: YJ tranny mount question
Honkylips 06-14-2002, 03:58 PM OK, for some reason (prolly that I'm a dumbass), I cant figure out my tranny mount on my YJ (4.0/5spd). I'm not talking about the main tranny mount that is centered under the tranny, but the "auxillary" one that is offset to the drivers side. This consists of a threaded sleeve and two bushings. I just can't seem to find a way to set it up so that it secures the tranny to the skidplate. Either I'm losing my head, or I'm missing something really obvious. Cany anybody take a peak at theirs and see what's up as far as how this thing installs. Thanks.
Travis Waldher 06-14-2002, 04:41 PM don't think its supposed to "secure" the tranny. I thought it was there to let the tranny move a little, but stop it from moving a whole lot. (from torque of course)
Insayn 06-14-2002, 04:50 PM You are correct. It is a torque arm that allows minimal movement of the tranny. You don't want it spinning in circles with you drivetrain, but you don't want it secured in a non-moving capacity either. There should be about 1/2 play up and down.
Honkylips 06-14-2002, 06:59 PM Hmmm, see the problem is that I'm getting a clunking noise sometimes when I let out the clutch. It also seems like the tranny shifter moves more than normal. The u-joints don't have any play in them so I figured it to be a tranny mount. I replaced the tranny mount, but I still have the noise. If the other mount is just to limit torque twist, it doesnt seem as though a bad one of those would make a clunking noise. Can a U-joint be bad enough to clunk pretty loud, but not have any play in it???????
Insayn 06-14-2002, 07:16 PM Check your motor mounts. I bet the rubber has torn away and is impacting the saftey collar.

Sorry to bring the thread back up from the grave... but I was wondering why it's bad (or your not supposed to) torque the side arm down all the way so it keeps it from moving back and forth?
I had the 1/2" play and noticed alot of side-to-side in the stick (manual) so I added some washers, and tightened it and the play went away... (just did this very recently..)
Why would you want it to move ??

well...........i don't have the "torque arm" anymore after i swapped out the pewwwwwgeot. i don't have any probs without it. might shit is TIGHT:flipoff2:
BillyBob535 05-13-2003, 05:35 AM I read that it was to supposedly prevent tranny case damage in high torque situations.
I guess a tranny case made of melted down beer cans isn't the best idea.
I ran without the torque stud for a couple of months after I broke it at Paragon and my AX-15 was fine. I have MORE T/R motor mounts and a poly tranny mount though. I couldn't stand the shifer smacking me in the knee every time I let the clutch out.
withamc 05-13-2003, 08:28 AM When I had the tranny rebuilt the dumb asses at the shop threw away the torque arm. Then I put on a custom skid plate and a poly tranny mount and the thing hardly moves anyway.

What tranny mount did you use?
I put a new one on recently but not sure if it's firm enough.....
I need to get the MORE motor mounts next theres some slop in the stock bushings.... did you notice a HUGE increase in vibes with the MORE mount?? Decrease in less engine twist.. ??
Did you do it on a YJ? If so was the driver side mount a bitch to get too? It appears it`ll be..
Thnx!

I`m sure handling the motor mounts will not be difficult... but time.... that's another thing.. lol
Knowing if I need 30 minutes to do it or if i`m gonna spend 30 minutes on the driver side alone is all I wanted to know :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

it'll take 33.5 minutes a side sober:flipoff2:
BillyBob535 05-14-2003, 04:49 PM I used a poly YJ tranny mount from Bob Suplee. I used poly torque stud bushings and new torque stud from 4wd.com. I did these before I did the motor mounts and I did notice an increase in vibration at idle but that was it. The MORE torsion rubber motor mounts did not have any effect on the vibes at all but they did take the slop out of the shifter.
It was on a YJ but it's an 89 so I have a lot more room on the driver's side than a 94 would but it is still not that bad to do. You just have to squeeze your arms in there and do it. I would do that side first as the second side is harder than the first as it won't line up without a little moving the motor around.

It takes me about 30 minutes to do both sides on my '90 YJ.

I still think this is the way to fix it. I did the same thing.
