: Used Gears?

Is it bad to install previously used gears? They have around 40,000 miles on them. What kind of problems could result? Should I just spring for new ones?
Thanks

If they are in good shape - no chiped teeth or wear - go for it. Just have them set-up right and you should be ready to go.

I put a used set of gears from someone on this board in my jeep. They are working great. Just have them set up right.

I just installed a used set in front of my buddies jeep. Works fine. Just make sure they track right and on used gears I set the lash a little tighter then called for. If you get them cheap enough run them. What's going to happen? They break. Fawk it. <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0">

my opinion is that "used" gears are "hardened" cause of the hot/cold process. I would use them in a minute as long as they are installed right....

I think the instructions included with Randys Ring n Pinion stuff, said to pay more attention to teh pattern on the coast side, when setting up used gears.

I guess cause the drive side might show an altered pattern with any wear.

Im setting up used gear sets.

as long as they were set up, and broken in properly the first time.

try and get front gears, from a part time truck, they will have fewer miles on them.
