I have a 92 YJ 4.0 AX-15 NP231 w/ tera SYE. My tranny is starting to crap out on me. The 3rd and 4th gear synchros are not doing there job. I can not get into 3rd without grinding and I have to time 4th just rught to pop it in smoothely.
I am trying to decide to throw in another AX-15 or swap in a different tranny T-case combo.
What are good possibilities for swapping in place of the AX-15?
How about the NP435/Dana 20 from an early Bronco?
I would love to get a lower 1st gear and am not too concerned abot losing the 5th gear. I just want something that will go in fairly easily so the Jeep doesn't have to be off the road for to long.

Oh Yeah, I am running a Belly-up Skidplate with only a 1in. body lift so size is a concern. I am a machinist by trade so I am not afraid to drill a few wholes to make it work.

Have you considered the SM420/SM465?

NV4500 is the right answer though... They're really not as expensive as everyone will lead you to believe. I found mine for $700 ('92 GM).

Good luck,
Jake

early bronco's never came with np435's, its just a very common swap.

I'd look for one of the commonly swapped 4 speed with a granny (t18, np435, sm420, sm465) and go from there, sometimes the one you want is impossible to find. I originally wanted to put a t18 in my jeep but sm420's are easier to find around here and much cheaper
