View Full Version : Anyone know what the heck this is?

I am posting this here because it is a left over in my shop and I am not sure where else it should be...

This thing is sitting the rack at my shop, we are getting ready to move buildings soon and I want to know what the heck it is and where I can sell it, or if it is even worth selling.

It was supposedly mistakenly bought a a government auction. It has no readable data tags other then the one on the motor. It apparently has hella gear reduction as the coupler spins free and easy and the output moves very slowly.

I figure it has to be some kind of power transmission for something, any ideas?

Right angle reduction drive.

Put a spindle on it and use it to turn rims while you weld on beadlocks.

Looks like it has *double* reduction - one reduction gearbox going into a worm drive reduction gearbox.

Looks like some kind of overtorque/overrunning clutch coupling between motor and gearbox to prevent damage to motor/gearbox.

Looks like it was originally purpose-built by one mfg, not cobbled together. (paint matches on everything and looks original)

My guesses:
Drive for a rotary table?
Pipe welding positioner minus several parts?
Drive for some kind of industrial/manufacturing positioning table?

Looks like it could be made into a rotary table if it's got the right reduction. Anything that looks like a variable speed control with it?

Damn, I was hoping somebody would know what the hell this thing is so I could sell it off...

It is of zero use to me but I hate pitching shit that somebody else could use...

How slow is very slow on the output?

If it's in the single-digit-RPM range, it's probably a welding positioner for welding round stuff.

If it's in the 30-60-90-ish RPM range (not so slow, I guess, but very slow relative to motor speed) then put a bucket on the end of it with tumbling gravel in it, and use it to tumble parts. :) It's how I built a pretty cool rotary tumbler, till the motor smoked. :(

Either way, it's probably worth less than shipping costs if you can't ID exactly what it is by nameplate. Might be better off taking it apart and selling the gear reduction stuff separately, and the motor separately as well. At least that way you can sell it by what it appears to do, rather than people expecting you to know what it is.

Post it on the local Craiglist under tools:

single phase (xx hp) with huge gear reduction. $50

As mentioned stick a tape "flag" on that end shaft to get an idea of rpm.

Post a couple of photos with a 12" ruler in them so folks can get an idea of sizing.

What part of right angle reduction drive didn't you understand?

Used in industry for any of a number of uses and others have even suggested wheeling fab related uses.

Paging Scott FJx, reading comprehension needed in aisle one.

i am pretty sure logjam-grant used something similar to make some bead locks. i know there was a thread here about it somewhere.

edit: i found his thread. the right angle gear reduction he used is a bit more primitive but looks to be the same idea: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=401033&highlight=beadlocks

I need one of these so I can cut circles, with my plasma
got to make gauge panelsas a nre product for customers, just need a way to use my plasma as my aluminum is a bit then, & my drill ptrss a bit fast

maybe I trade ya out of it, check shipping to 95966, 1st see how fast it turns

How many of you guys have 3 phase to utilize it?
1/2 a penny a pound- scrap it......

Looks like a windlass drive for a boat/ship.

swap out the motor:idea::flipoff2:

found a 30-1 gear reduction unit for $10, just waiting on shipping quote, I'll use a drill motor:smokin:

I had one almost identicle to that, except mine was a bigger motor from the looks of it. I bought it surplus from the chemical plant I work in, just for the 3 phase motor to build a phase converter. The coupling is just a rubber flexible coupling, it will come apart if the gear reduction gets jammed and the motor continues to run. The one I bought was an agitator drive, used to turn the big mixer in a reactor. The right angle gear reduction can be used for almost anything though, but it isn't going to fetch you a whole lot of money. My gear reduction box was 3 foot long, 1 foot square, and 100% cast iron, it weighed 500 lbs whn I finally got around to taking it to scrap, I think it fetched me about $50. More than I gave for it and the motor...

Jason

Dug, I'm interested in it, and close enough to pick it up. What's the motor RPM?

PM sent.

If you want to know the RPM that bad you can come climb up in my rack and read the tag, it's dirty up there...
