: Built CJ5's
bigjakesxj 09-08-2007, 07:38 PM Hoping to see what you guys are doing for extra wheel base and still keeping a low pro. I've seen some that were stretched but seemed super high on waggy leafs. Would cherokee's in the back be lower than waggies. Looking to kinda of start a CJ5 thread w/specs also
Rusty4wd 09-08-2007, 08:22 PM I kept my 5 spring under with XJ springs in the rear and waggy fronts on
other end. Moved all the spring mounts as well. The rear Scout 44 went 12 inches back and the front Scout 44 got moved 4 inches forward over stock. Of course I had to move all the steering gear as well. Switched to a modified J20 box anyway and had to do some snaking of the steering shaft using a carrier bearing and an additional u-joint. I am running 36 inch Iroks and went to flat fenders up front and comp cut the rear. Got a 2 inch body lift and about three inches of suspension. Got just a little rubbing at the extreme limits or the suspension flex available and need to add some bump stops to stop it. 99 inches of wheelbase and about as low as I can be for the tire size. Works pretty good. :flipoff2:
Ford style radius arms in the front, pushed forward ~5 inches. Offset center pin Alcan's in the rear, pushed back ~4 inches.
waiting for winter then 14 bolt and 60 going in.. made up new crosmember for rear out of 1.5 x 3 x 3/16 tube will give me abot 8" in rear.. dont know about front yet.
Lars915 09-09-2007, 07:04 AM In keeping with the low profile theme, what are y'all doing for fuel tanks? Fuel cell in the bed?
bigjakesxj 09-09-2007, 07:41 AM how bout some pictures
jeepn-jason 09-09-2007, 09:51 AM I have rear HD cj springs on the front, the ones with a military wrap, and xjs with an extra main leaf in the rear. The fixed mount on the rear was moved back around 7" If I recall, and the front was moved foward about 1.5". With the combo of springs and moved mounts I have a 99" wb. It works great on some stuff, but I would like to have around 104". Ill probably link the rear in the future to accomplish this. http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q298/jeepn-jason/DriversSide.jpg http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q298/jeepn-jason/jeep001.jpg
pmaddy 09-09-2007, 10:36 AM I used a combo of stock YJ springs and BDS 2 inchers with the shackle mount through the frame to keep it low.
pmaddy, do you have pics of your shackle mount up close?

I went with an RCI 15 gallon cell behind the seats after I moved the rear axle back. Forgot to mention that.

Looks good! Also looks like you will be able to keep the body intact in the rear if you choose to.
WheelingPiazza 09-14-2007, 07:31 AM Streched to 98 inches on mine,
Combination of waggy springs in the front and extending the frame 6 inches in the rear.

davenjeip 09-14-2007, 09:11 AM Are you guys able to get any sort of decent stretch without extending the frame rails?
New to the leaf thing, as I come from having a coil sprung Jeep, and still trying to get a grasp what you can do by just swapping springs and moving mounts.
Got a 1970 CJ5 (81" WB) that I'm looking to get somewhere close to 97ish inches out of.

You wont be able to get to 97 without extending the rear and the front, there just isnt enough frame if you run leafs.
I added 4 inchs to the front of mine just to run the waggy springs in front.

You do nice work.
A friend of mine is looking to stretch his 5 out and he should see this.
Again, nice work.
TurboJeep275 09-14-2007, 03:57 PM I have a 98" wheelbase with stock length frame, I used Cherokee springs in the rear and waggys up front. For the rear I used the stock spring mounts and moved the shackle mount to the rear bumper, and for the front I moved the spring mounts forward a few inches and moved the shackle mount as far forward as possible.
1980 CJ5 with 39.5” tires
Heres a few pics
Geesh 09-14-2007, 04:29 PM short-nosed CJ-5, 96" WB, Waggy 44 SOA on 7-leaf waggy's (all four). I had to recess the shackles into the frame to reduce ride height. She's since settled some and works well, that is, not too tippy-feeling.
BTW, 36 BP IROK's.

Hoping to have it on the road by the end of the month. I'd post a build up thread on here, but I am scared I'll get torn a new one :flipoff2:

Do you have any side/rear shots of it on flat ground just so I can see how much of the body has been cut? I am getting ready to stretch my 5 out with the same spring setup, but I want to keep the the fenderwell openings just so I can run it on the street without getting hassled. I don't mind cutting them to allow as much room as possible to slide the rear back, I just need to keep the "appearance." Thanks.
