I use an E-trex and , yes it does track your course. it is compatable with map software on your PC. It has a nice optional dash mount and cigarette lighter adapter available. I use mine as a speedometer on the street. I like it lots, although I don't use it as much as I thought I would.

a gps is like any tool. Its something most don't use often, and when it does come out. its to either A) find someone else, or B) find out where you are cause your lost. ;)

You forgot the most important part.

Just like any other tool if you don't know how to use it properly, it ain't going to do a god damned thing for ya, and it might get ya hurt too.

I use a Magellan myself but you need to start with basic map and compass to get the full benfit of a GPS. Plugging in wyapoints is easy enough but a GPS will typically only tell you how to get there crow fly which unfortunatly doesn't account for rivers, lakes and gourges.

I always have mine logging my route so if (when) it gets dark I can back track using it to keep from falling off, or into anything I can't see. And its an acurate speedo for the street.
