: sway bar on 88, necessary?
tpaul8705 09-09-2007, 10:02 PM So I twisted off the last few remaining bolts on my sway bar, two have apparently been absent for years. I am dreading drilling and retapping, and welding appears to be the best quick fix, until bushings need replacing some day. So I guess my question is.....do I really need it at all? It seems I would get more lateral travel without it, good thing?

I would have to say--you answered your own question ;)
bbagwell 09-10-2007, 01:47 AM Yup, ditch it.
MT4Runner 09-10-2007, 08:05 AM Good shocks are necessary.
With crappy shocks, you will wish you had a swaybar.
If you have tons of body roll or "death roll", change your shocks.
Max Volume 09-10-2007, 08:40 AM Take it off. I have blown monroes and no swaybar on my 87 and its not that bad. It was even better before the shocks went south!
burtv 09-10-2007, 09:07 AM Just remember its not a sports car and any high speed quick/emergency turn of the wheel will have a high pucker value.
Big91RustyBucket 09-10-2007, 09:10 AM So it is an 88 What? K5 , Jeep , Unimog , or what?
4CrawlR 09-10-2007, 09:35 AM Take it off, give it a test drive. If you notice little or no difference, leave it off. If it makes a big difference on the road, bite the bullet and put it back on.

88 Toyota. This thread was moved here from the Toyota truck section.
Big91RustyBucket 09-10-2007, 10:14 AM Ahh that was unknow as It wasn't in the yota section when I saw it .
tpaul8705 09-10-2007, 01:32 PM Thanks for all the thoughts on it guys; a few of my local buddies have told me basically the same info, I just figured I'd test the waters here as well. By the way, I got a good laugh out of the "high pucker value"
renolaw 09-10-2007, 10:38 PM panic stops w/ out a sway bar can be...um...hellish. i use a SB on my rig since i often trailer a small pack mule to and over the trail. It's really helpful zipping down the freeway and mountain roads w/ the trailer tagging along--at least it flattens out the turns and feels a lot better than the dreaded roll out w/ a loaded military trailer pushing from behind.
good luck
7.62FMJ 09-11-2007, 12:04 PM I took the sway bar off of my F150 and I can't tell a bit of difference. Even with 10-year old stock shocks, there is virtually no excess body roll. Even towing a couple/few tons, and panic stops are no different.
hillbilie 09-11-2007, 02:44 PM i always take the sway bar off my trucks, u probably wont even be able to tell the difference, or maby just a little. so take that shit off u dont need it
