: which CAI for CTD
B2Krawler 09-10-2007, 09:44 AM which cold air intake should i Buy for my 04 CTD, there are so many brands, (K&N, AirAid, AFE, Summit, etc) they range from $200 to $500, is there a brand that offers better filtration. Is there a brand that does not require oil, I want something that can handle future upgrades, (I just have a mellow programmer so far)
I have heared many say they got no increase in power, just noise, if that is the case is there a aftermarket charger to fit in the stock box that is recommended.
I would obviously like to buy a quality product, that wont hurt my engine, but does that mean $500
I tried a search, but searching on this site can take all day to get what your looking for?????
94Dodge Truggy 09-10-2007, 09:52 AM Afe has been good to me!
ProjectGoat 09-10-2007, 01:45 PM You pay $500 for an air intake, I hope they use vaseline. :shaking: Good god man, please do some shopping. You can get a filter for $40-$60 and make your own for a total of about $100 or so. I have like $65 in mine, including the filter, and it is all 6" suff going down to 4" at the turbo. In othr words, plenty of airlfow
94Dodge Truggy 09-11-2007, 03:56 AM Go for it. Do it yourself at Home depot if you have extra time. My time is very limited and when I do have time I tractor pull and show the cummins off. That is why I went with AFE.

The AFE is good stuff by the way...I like their products

Shawn aFe and AEM are the only companies I know of that make oilless filters at this time. Neither is particularly cheap though. I recently installed an aFe filter and the fit and finish was very good and it was easy to install (it is just an intake after all). It was installed at the same time as exhaust and a programmer so I can't say how much power the intake added.
If you are looking for something less expensive I have found that S&B intakes are just as good as the competition and the prices are much more reasonable.
ProjectGoat 09-11-2007, 01:08 PM It is very unlikely that by just changing the air filter to a free flowing setup you will notice a seat of the pants difference. On a chassis dyno, maybe a few ponies. Today's intake's are typically very efficient and not very restricitive. On your CTD, there is a silencer in the tract that can be removed for more flow. A small flatblade screwdriver, to pop it open, then take a hammer and a wood block, and knock the silencer out. Then take a hole saw, and drill numerous holes in the bottom of the stock air filter box. Drop in a free flowing filter in the stock box, and you will have about $35 and 1 hour in a intake setup, and I guarantee it will make within 2-3 HP of ANY intake you put on your truck. Now, if you plan on upping teh balls to your CTD, a bigger/less restrictive intake will be worth the money. But, if you stick with exhaust and a programmer (or less), the intake I described above will be more than enough.
ptgarcia 09-11-2007, 09:55 PM I get the Quadzilla Monster Intake (http://www.quadzillapower.com/products/intake.html). You can get it with an oilless filter made for them by aFe. Buy from the DTR Store (http://store.dieseltruckresource.com/) and you'll get the best price.

What are you doing posting here??? Shouldn't you be sending some coil springs out?:D:laughing:
ptgarcia 09-12-2007, 10:06 PM What, are you following me around?
Coils are on the way!
sixgunjack 09-13-2007, 04:24 AM never noticed if that Afe filter helped me over a rock before?

Desert Proven 09-13-2007, 10:20 PM We run the AEM intake, but I couldn't honestly tell you that it is going to give you more power. It will help keep your EGT's lower and dry filter is easy to clean and lasts way longer than an oiled filter. We've been running them in Baja for a while on the CTD and like they way they perform.
I suspect the new AFE would perform in a similar fashion, we just haven't tested it to be sure. We destroyed an older AFE filter in the dust.
paulkeith 09-14-2007, 12:50 PM i've heard positive stuff about AFE, but the cost is just ridiculous. I did like many others on my PSD forums and got the large paper element filter from napa. Its still a paper element so it retains good filtration qualities, but its surface area is enormous, which i guess is the flow benefit. I make a cool noise on shifts now (6spd tranny) when the boosted air rushes back out past the compressor, and that's about it.
I've heard , at least with the 7.3L psds, the stock airbox just didn't seal that well. This is what turns most people away from just a performance drop-in element. so my setup now is a giant freaking paper element to a free flowing (ish?) tube to the turbo.
i can try to track down the napa part number if you want it. the filter is like 45 bucks.

Are you referring to the Donaldson?
paulkeith 09-18-2007, 11:01 AM uhh, i want to say its a napa 6637? we just call it the BFF. fleetfilter.com has the best price, but you need the WIX part number, which is 46637.

fleetfilter's page has items as javascript links so i can't link you do it.
www.fleetfilter.com and just punch in 6637. 27 bones.
the ford guys call this intake setup the "tymar" or some shit, but its just for whoever got credit for it online. I've seen tons of psd and ctd guys use it, i'm on my second one and happy with it.
hope this helps,
Paul
Timmay 09-18-2007, 11:14 AM I run the BHAF, or BFF, or tymar, whatever. It's great. I don't know about power but it sounds awesome and I needed to replace the stock one anyway. Mine was $42ish at Napa.

94Dodge Truggy 09-18-2007, 11:28 AM That sure looks like a paper element Timmay!:(
chris demartini 09-18-2007, 11:38 AM I have an AEM Brute Force, don't remember what it costed because I bought it with a turbo back exhaust and chip.

Is that an issue? I didn't see him specifially requesting something else. I know the 3rd gens are a bit different in how you connect that filter, but people still run it with lots of power.
I'd hope he's looking for a oilless filter setup...

Paper filter exposed? Have you seen what happens to a paper filter when it gets wet? Your turbo will not appreciate the consequences.

I run a Napa version on mine, have for 4+ years, wet or not, never had a problem. Granted I've never got it THAT deep in the water, but as far as just splash or rain reaching it, it's never been damaged or compromised. You can even reuse your Filterminder if you have one, just drill a hole and pop it in the end.
Po' riggity 09-25-2007, 09:03 AM Amsoil also makes a dry filter. Most people use the 4510 filter, and a 3" to 4" PVC or sched. 40 adapter. Drill a hole for the sensor, and wala, homemade air intake thats a heck of a lot cheaper than the others, and filters better as well. PM me for the PBB price if you are interested.
