I busted up my drag link and tie rods... so I went out and got 1 1/4 od dom tubing that is 3/4 id 1/4 wall

Can I use Hiem links as tie rod ends?

what are the pros and cons?

smart or stupid?

I eventualy am going to go Hydro Assist...

Let me know...

I've been running heims for years on my trail rig. They work just fine. They may not be legal in your state for street use. You might want to check that out. Double sheer mounts are always better. Personally I use 3/4x3/4 heims, weld in bungs and 1.5 x .25 wall tubing for tie rods. They have held up to eveything from 37's to 42's withot issue. I also run hydro assist.

Heims are gonna get sloppy faster than tie-rod ends. For a street rig, I wouldn't use 'em. Alot of people do though, so do what makes you feel good.

Heims are gonna get sloppy quicker, as stated, and those cheap heims are only gonna increase how often you're gonna have to replace them. It adds up . Also, the legality issue. May wanna look into that.
Why not go with 1 ton TRE's for now? I see no benefit to using heims in your case....

if you dont have crazy angles in your drag link, then go with a TRE
if you have some wild stuff going on, angle wise, get some good quality heims and run them.

(edited because im a freaking retard)

if you dont have crazy angles in your tacbar, then go with a TRE at the frame end and a bushing at the axle.

if you have some wild stuff going on, angle wise, get some good quality heims and run them.

there are people who trash them every trip and those who have had them on for over a year. my buddy ran them on his tracbar with a bushing at one end and a heim on the other. this reduces the stress on the joint and dampens the hard blows to the heim. his lasted for over a year and a half. when he replaced the tracbar the joint was still good.

I dont have a trac bar...

I drive a cj that is leaf sprung, just need to use four hiems...

I am getting the hiems later this week... with Double Sheer mounts.

Spend the money on the best quality joints. There are plenty of 20 dollar heims out there that aren't worth a shit. I spent 50-60 bucks a piece on mine and they have held up great (5 years of trail pounding) It's well worth it. Heim quality can be directly proportionate to the length of your life.....if you know what I mean. Don't cheap out on such a critical part.

I just did mine on my 00' TJ. It a DD for a few more months. I got two of those Teraflex TREs for free so I wanted to use those. I used the TREs for the tie rod and used heims for the drag link. I used the heims for clearance since the stock Waggy steering setup was contacting my coil bucket.
