ive been reading about some conversions on my 46 cj2a and i want to put a 4 speed with a granny gear. i know about the t18 and t19 and the t98 trannies and i have a question some gearhead on here will know. what tranny will bolt in with the flathead 4 banger and the dana 18 tcase. i dont want to use an addapter because the drive train is so short so space is limited. thanks

A T98 out of a Willys pickup will do the trick, if i recall correctly. They are petty damn rare though. T18 or T19 could be made to work. You'll need a short input shaft version. I seem to recall a basic space being needed between the bellhousing and tranny. It's been a long time so I am a little foggy on the details.

We did an SM420 to a Flathead bellhousing once. No spacer needed and just some minor machining required. Of course you'd need an adapter to the t-case. But the tranny is so short (10.5 inches) it worked extremely well. Just another possible option for you.

all 4 spd. used an adaptor some where. Even the rare factory optioned T98 that was with a F-134/D18 combo in CJB's, CJ5's and FC trucks. CJ3B website has a write up on the T98 and photos I took of one that I had. FYI, Jack O'Brien built or builds a dana 18 T.C. with optional 3.6/4.1/4.86 lo range gears. I have one of his D18 4.86 that's used, for sale.
