I found a guy getting rid of a xR400R, it is pretty nice save some plastic that is scraped up...I would be trading him my shitty old dodge shadow for it...

what do ya think?? I'm 245 lbs and my only other dirtbike was a kawasaki kdx200 which was a lot of fun..

As long as you dont plan on jumping or running too fast it will be fun. They are kind of outdated to say the least with the newer four strokes but they are reliable as sin and great trail bikes.

For a dodge shadow i'd say its a hell of a deal

as a longstanding owner of a kdx200, with a klx650 also, I fail to see how your expectations can be lived up to by a xr400! They are definately not "new school" 4 stroke motors, and will feel slow compared to a 2 stroke, Imho.

get it. whats your car worth compared to what the bike is worth, thats the overall factor here, u dont wanna loose money by doing this, if u can see your car for more than what the bike is worth, do it.

My friend and I go riding a lot in the woods, he has a 2000 XR 400 and I have a 2000 WR 400.
Here's the basics about the XR.
It's slow for a 400, only 33 HP from the factory, compared to 42 or so on a YZ/WR 400. It's air cooled, not a plus, but not a big deal since it has a large oil capacity and an oil cooler. The other guys are right, the suspension sucks unless you just want to cruise down a road or trail. I never feel confident jumping that bike. The best thing about the XR is that the motor has A LOT of smooth low end power, that's about it.
There's nothing wrong with an XR, it just uses technology from about 20 years ago.
If you want something lighter, snappier, and up to date, get a YZ 400/426, there are tons of them out there. Just stay away from 98/99 years, they don't have a hot start button on the carb, which you'll need if you ever want your bike to start after you stall it.
Oh yeah, my friend weighs about 240 and the XR doesn't have a problem pulling him around.
