Hi guys,

Billavista's on the west coast, visiting family.

Scored an old truck with an axle, and possibly engine I need...back in Halifax!!

Any leads / ideas / contacts for shipping anything from a whole truck to just and axle on a palet from Port Alberni (on the Island) to Halifax ???

Thanks

Translate please :flipoff2:

Is that a category in the yellow pages I should look-up.

I'm an "anything but UPS" virgin

If you are looking just to ship the axle call a trucking company. Prices seem to vary quite a bit for some reason so check around. I shipped a motor (450lbs) from Vancouver to Ontario for $140 door to door using Fast Freight, they are in the phone book.
For shipping the whole truck there is a company that ships vehicles by rail across Canada for a good price, can't think of the name right now though, do an internet search and you'll find them.

frieght broker is someone who has accounts with many shipping companies.
they can give you a lower rate then you will get direct walking in the door of a frieght company.
they have made a deal with the hauler based on volume.
United Terminals 'UTL' is in both BC and Ontario and there bread n butter is the long hauls.
I worked for US companies so the forwarders I know of are usually into the south frieght business.

not much help, sorry

I cannot imagine a deal good enough that shipping across Canada wont kill, though you are from the second most backward province :flipoff2: , good thing for you the Newfies are that messed up.

Well MJ

I'd be interested in your opinion, since our markets (East v West) are soooo different (as in you can't find anything but junk out East)

What I scored was a 78 F250 crew cab with 400m rebuilt 60k km ago, NP435 (or T18 wide), NP 205, RCD60, D60 rear. Haven't driven it yet, it started and ran fine. Body beat up a bit, but not all rusted out.

I really only wanted the RCD60. I paid $1200.

I intended to just strip the RC60 and have the rest towed away...but the rest is in really good shape, esp. by Eastern standards.....I really want the whole thing back home.

Dunno what the heck I'm gonna do yet.

I have used Hansen's Forwarding to ship a car by rail a couple of times. Great service and good rates. http://www.lhf.com/ Last I remember is it was about $900-$1000 to Vancouver to Toronto so probably at least $1200 to Halifax.

Are you going to be in Vancouver at all? If you are drop me a note and I'll give you my phone number.

To follow up - here's the quotes I got:

Searail 1-800-282-9892

Vancouver to Halifax $1378
Nanaimo to Halifax $1608
Port Alberni to Halifax $1663

L Hansens Forwarding 1-888-420-8888

Van to Halifax $1321
Nanaimo to Halifax $1488
Port Alberni to Halifax $ 1580

I'm going to bite the bullet and have Hansen's door to door it for me from Alberni to Halifax

One thing has me stumped.....is there no market out here for these things. Sure, it's an old truck, and the body is fugly in 2 tone caramel and dark brown 70's garish colours, dented up and all. But DAMN if it isn't in excellent shape mechanically...a 5 year old truck out east would not be this good and unrusty. All the bushings are good, not a hole or rattle in the exhaust, no leaks, even the friggin diff tags ar present and legible, and you can read the original Ford sticker on the driveshaft!!!

Specs out as:

1978 Ford F250 Camper Special
400m, NP435, NP 205, RCD60 front, FFD60 rear, 4.10 gears, extracab, longbox, twin tanks, electric brakes, and everything works except 1 tail light and the parking brake.

I stole the thing for $1200, and even after I ship it home, It's still better than any $3k rig I'd find in NS.

The damn thing had been for sale for months...guy was asking $1800 originally.

WTF??? How had someone not snapped it up? No market out here? Are they dime a dozen? Am I stoned? I'm not getting it.

But I got me an RCD60...swap in my RCD44 and I git a tow rig too....woo hoo!!!!!

You are in the middle of nowhereville BC.

All us guys down here in the Lower Mainland just look for the same stuff just WAY closer to home.

Call us spoiled.

MJ is the only one I can think of who personally scours the province regularly.

I am gonna have our "on the road" service truck have a list of desireable items and finders fee for stuff like that soon.

you got a good deal.
the front axle is worth the purchase price the rest is gravy.
I am amazed you think it is still a deal after shipping.
things must be truly lean back there.
what are you gonna do with that r60?
I really DO NOT want to hear 'cut it up to use as rear axle'.

Stokjeep...that's cool idea, when I retire I want to have big rig and roam the country scrounging junk.....trouble is, I suppose I should sell some of it to make a living!

MJ...well. it's mostly the winters and salt I guess that makes it worthwhile. For reference...the 79 F250 I bought out East...the U bolt plates had rusted away to literally cereal package thin. This thing is mint by comparison.

Plans? The RC60 will join my D70 rear, under a YJ frame, with 105" WB and an Aluminum Land Rover body on top...planning on an ORD doubler, T-18, and 39.5 TSLs. Gonna take a while....

But I plan on dropping the RC60, and swap in my RCD44 which I had planned to use ofr the project...then I have a tow rig . parts hauler too!

But it is hard to swallow almost $2k just for shipping :barf:

why doncha just drive it or have someone drive it -

there are services that hook up folks willing to drive vehicles one way with folks who need something moved one way.

Sean,

I'm not driving it, coz I've got a 2 year old son with me!!!

And I don't know the rig well enough to hand it to someone else in good conscience, to go all that way.....it's a helluva distance in any 25 year old rig
