View Full Version : How much copper comes out of a engine drive welder?

I have an old hobart 400 amp machine...it has a Chrysler flathead so ya its old. Anyway it doesn't work and I don't have time for it, just wondering if its work pulling the copper out of one these things or just taking it to the scrap yard as steel.

The old generator gets valued in it's own scrap category if you seperate it from the rest on the crap. The amperage tap coil and any old cables would get valued as "dirty copper". I'd make an effort to seperate as much of the other copper as you can - it's worth it.

The engine might be of interest to someone that has an WC series military Dodge, old power wagon, or M37. They mostly had the 230(early) or 251(later) flathead. A lot of the military Dodge people still run them - it's a real stout little engine. See if you can ID exactly what you have and maybe put it in the parts classifieds on one of the military dodge sites. They have a pretty loyal following.

ya i figured I could get someone to buy the motor, do you think I could get 100 pounds of copper out of that thing?

Does it really matter how much is in there if you are scrapping it? Even if it is only 25 Lbs, it is worth taking the copper out. Dirty copper goes for about $2 per/Lb here, where steel/tin goes for about $.05 per/Lb.

I took in over 50 Lbs of copper just in welding leads I picked up at my local dump. Stripped them the old fashioned way and took them in, got about the same money for the leads, as for a complete 1 ton minus the drive train...

maybe that explains why people are stealing the copper out of a/c units around here
