So you took my advice and used an old cast iron skillet :flipoff2:

well.. I almost went to the trouble to make the cover look like a D44, even including a functioning fill plug. But other than confusing people, I figured it would be :rainbow:

Hmmm.. that ought to hang up nicely;)

Doubt it, its not hanging below the lowest point of the diff. It doesn't stick out but a 1/4" further than the stock cover did. And with the way the pinion is rotated up the stock cover was very vulnerable, never mind the fact if you pulled the edge of that flimsy cover away from the diff it would leak.

If there was a thick/HD OEM M20 cover that existed I woulda went through route. but none does.

No offence intended, but I noticed it was much bigger than stock and the rotation of the axle + the taper of the cover = a level spot....to me at least this set up looks like it would hang up.
Those edges at the small end need to be rounded in my opinion.

I've seen some people take the stock cover (see CJDeans cover)and reenforce it with flat bar for the ring gear protection and a home brew 1/4" ring for the flange..... Really you only need a half moon for the bottom of the flange the top don't see much abuse although some people use thicker material and mount links to the top of the ring.

well. time wil tell on the hang up thing. I considered it when I built it, still don't think its an issue, sure it may happen, but I would rather run that than the flimsy stock cover.

I thought about cutting a ring to protect the lip, then weld on steel to the cover for reinforcment. But every cover I have seen for that does not have a flat surface for a ring to bolt up against. They all have this "ridge" between the bolts. So.. that option was out too. Yes.. I probably could have crushed that ridge down, but to me, that isn't doing it "right".

of course... now I get an idea. Cut a ring for it. Cut the lip off the stock cover, weld the dome to the ring, then weld steel to the ring and dome. well.. maybe next time.

i think we still got a M20 thingie that prevents peel back for the bottom of the cover. ask him, or i will but you wont get an answer till around 10 tonight :D

Yep he had one of them AMC 20 things on the counter last time I was in.

Yeah.. but peeling the cover back was only part of the problem. The flimsy 20 cover had about 5 dents in it. 1 of them from the garage when I dropped it 12". I was more worried about caving the cover in than anything else.

Ya know, I dont see it hanging up, less its hangin on the diff itself. There's no real lip that I can see. should be stout too

If that cover is made from strong enough material, who cares if it hangs up?
Hell I drag my D60 cover like a dog drags his ass!!

The stock 20 cover is thin as hell and like was said, with the pinion rotated its even more vulnerable, believe me I know from experience. One of my first casualties was a peeled up and punctured 20 cover and subsequent melt-down of all internal parts. I eventually built a skid plate but that cover would have done the job nicely. Just put a sticker or something on it and nobody will say a word.
Nice work dude!

The ring was 3/8", the cover itself is all 1/4" plate. Welded on both sides. 2 days, still no leaks. :D
