I have been looking at doing this myself and plan on doing what Mr. Blaine did. Just chop off the top with a Sawall or Plasma Cutter and weld in a spacer. It shouldn't be a tough project by any means.

I saw a picture of a piece of tubing welded right on top of where the top post mount was. This guy cut out the top of the mount and welded on the tubing and the shock slid up inside the tubing. He cross drilled the tubing to put in the upper bolt. Can't remember where the link is. It was functional.
I say, cut it all off and go coilovers in the front! Use a speedecut and a grinder and Pearldisc.

That was me, I took a hole saw and cut a 4" hole in the top of the mount where the shock mounted. I used a 5" section of tube and made a shock mount inside for the tube. I can run 9012's and they work great.

like you guys said it's not too difficult, it's just getting tools into there! i'll try a zip cut on my grinder and weld in 2 pieces of tube to space it, i guess i'll see what we can do.
