launched the tow rig once. Cruising down a dirt/gravel road. Doing about 50-60mph. Came across a sign that said "speed bump ahead" ok.. so I let off the gas and look for it. The ground masked the fact that this 10" tall "bump" was only 20' in front of the sign.

All I remember is everything in the cab going zero-g (big gulps included), the horizon, and re-entry. I have no idea how much air I caught, but after I got out and finished laughing my ass off. Discovered I cleared nearly 30 feet before a tire touched the ground again.

Not bad for a 6,000lb truck and no damage to show for it. (ok.. I had a spilled big gulp.)

well i jumped off a dirt pile and landed on nice rock. nope no pics, since it was not expected to happen. who whould have thoguht a little 4runner with a 4cyl could catch so much air while traveling so slowly

Hmm... then there was the time at Ocean Shores, driving the same tow rig again in soft sand at 1am. hit a berm I couldn't see doing around 30mph. Launched it, noseplanted in the next berm, front end bounced up, and as I landed the second time was already turned hard left and floored to get out of that stuff before getting stuck.

I dunno how that truck survives me.

how about pics of teh dammage and the full story play by play?

TR
06-16-2002, 11:37 AM
I will try to get pics tomarrow. ok the play by play, We where setting up the obstical course for the skyjacker challange next weekend. well i tested the mud pit in 2wd and got through it (same one the MTTR set up for there mud bog) but i dug it out a little with a cat 948. any way every thing was justabout set up so i deceide to pre-run the obstical course. well i started off around the first turn down the straigh away and my alternator starts to squiel (sp) i thought ok i will shut it down and check it out. Nah so i make the next turn and line up for the little hill well i was only in 1st i think and wasnt going that fast. any way i hit it nice and smooth and i thought i just pulled the front tires off the ground but then i realized that my rear tires where off the ground and all i could do was hold on which i did. felt the rear land somewhat softly and the the front came down with a huge shock. i stop the truck and get out and lay on the ground cause my back was in huge pain.

I will post pictures and a damage report tomarrow.

When I lived in the Philipines I launched my EB into a rice paddy. Broke my front D44, both motor mounts and the trans mount, destroyed the radiator when the fan went through it and ripped the left side trailing arm mount out of the frame. Oh, I almost forgot, I got towed back to my house in Bo. Barretto by a water buffalo.

I had lotsa pics of that drunken episode but they were lost somewhere between the P.I. and Greece.

93 YJ blastin across a long muddy stretch at dusk that I had got stuck in earlier (yup, back when it was on 31's) , forgot all about the 3 foot deep ditch that I crawled through during daylight. Hit it doing probably about 10 mph, tires turnin for about 30. Front end sank then went skyward and landed hard. Awefull clankin bangin noise, oil pressure dropped to zero faster than I could look at the guage. Turns out that the clankin bangin was the rear driveshaft hittin the heat shield over the muffler. Driveshaft only reached that far over because I had sheared off the motor mount arms from the block causing the engine to drop 6 inches on the passenger side, crushing the oil filter and dumping all the oil in the dirt (yea, I cleaned it up). First time I got towed home on a trailer.

If that doesnt count as a real jump, there was the rain diverter on a gravel road in the George Washington National Forrest. Gettin into camp late, cruisin down the gravel road up the mountain at nite, with utility trailer in tow at about 30 mph. Whats that dark spot in the trail up ahead I thought. Why is the ground so far away I thought. Wow that really hurt I thought. Did about 2 mph up the rest of that friggin hill, took me forever to get to camp. Took even longer to break the suction between my ass and the seat cover from the air time.

I tried to jump my Super Duty, but I hit my face right square in the passenger side window as soon as I left the ground. Maybe a trampoline would help get me over the truck....

I've never jumped my Jeep, but my old golfing buddy and I used to get drunk and take turns jumping the golf cart off the big sand traps. The only casualties were spilled beer and the occasional golf club.

I did that with my Willy's at a tough truck race. I hit a jump that was about 4 feet high, going about 35mph. It was the first time I jumped it and it landed perfect. I bent the front springs and the frame rail on the drivers side. I was the only guy with the nuts to hit the 4 foot jump at the finish line so I got first place, $112 dollars.:D

One reason I would love to, but yet know I shouldn't try to find a Tough Truck race to enter. 1,000's of people screaming and cheering... I know I'de do something stupid. :D

Was trying to think of which was the best story. I am guessing my "Accidential" start to wheeling First time out with the club and they decided they would take me up the "short cut" on to the main trail on Cow mountian. I was last in line and every one went up this steep incline onto the main trail. My turn came and well I thought I would show off wound up my 87 Nissan (complete stock) and took a run at the hill hit it at 25mph and FLEW.....Landed on the other side of the trail in a big ditch. All I could think was, I need to get the fawk out of the ditch before my momentem stopped. I nailed thew gas again and "hopped" on to the main trail. That is when I stopped to assess the damages and do a head count....I forgot I had a person in the bed LOL ooops. Only thing damaged was my 7" PA horn was squashed like soda can. And the guy in the back was ok just stunned a little. Best part was we had it on video. My co-pilot had my video cam going at the time. Need to find that video tape.

What everyone "kinda forgot to tell me" was to go up the hill slow cause you have to make a 90 degee turn at the top on to the main trail and a big ditch on the other side. All in all My little nissian lived, as did my passenger in the bed hahahahaah

My friend jumped his IFS Toy over a small damn, and cleared the "landing area" (downward slope on the other side), landed front first on flat ground and all he did was bend his UCA brackets. Got it on video, too. I told him to SAS it, and it'll be fine, but the dumbass sold it for $750!

Here's one from a dezert race

Thinking of going SAS? I was...but I wanted to trash the old shit first. The dumbasses with the camera freaked out and ran before they could get a good shot. This is the launch from a pretty steep 7' drop. Landed it right in between 2 brand new trucks. Sure got their attention in a hurry. Only snapped a front drive axle. Go figger.

Not the best shot, but I hit this 6' high jump about 7 times that day. Not very fast, the jump was too steep. Never had a single problem tho.

This is Mark Hansen of WMS with an old 2WD 'Beater' he took out to Disney..... He never got as much air as he wanted, because he had rolled the right front off the bead earlier on the rocks! Just could not get up enought speed for the jump. :D

Every time he landed he was on the RF wheel. The tire was VERY FLAT..

He made 4 or 5 jumps and never broke anything (else that is).. :)

I jumped my YJ on a sand dune. I got about 6 feet of air. I broke the motor off the frame, my oil filter hit the frame and it blew oil everywhere, bent one of my springs. The bent spring caused my axle to shift which dented the hell out of a shock. I had so much droop from the air that my rear axle came apart in the middle My head hit the rear view mirror which shattered my windshield. Then I got to go to the ER cause my head was bleeding.

85MPH in a 36,000lb worktruck in the waldo tunnel in a rainstorm racing a guy from work at 4:30am I hit that bump in the beginning and the truck went 2ft in the air not very high but in that truck it was freaky! Bad thing is SFPD was coming in to work and saw the whole thing and the guy lives 2 doors down from the Prez of my company. Came banging on his door while the guy was eating dinner a big piece of my ass is still missing from that one. At least I won the race!
