: Carb Secondary Question
punkskalar 06-16-2002, 02:10 PM As most of you know, I just got a free ZUK, and it runs fine.... well except for the whole "won't go over 50 mph" problem... Im not getting any vaccuum to the secondary diaphram at all, I can look down the carb, and watch the first barrel suck down the go juice, but the second never opens... I can open it manually with a long screwdriver, as well as hooking a vaccuum pump to it and it will open up and suck gas as well... I think some of the vaccuum hoses may have been moved around, as i have one coming from the manifold (constant vaccuum) with a screw in the end of it... Any one have any pics or diagrams of the vaccuum lines on the carb so i can get this thing running right? Too bad I haven't seen another carbed zuk around here, id just go take a look.... And yeah, i searched, couldn't find much useful information... Thanks, Hugh
punkskalar 06-16-2002, 06:20 PM Surely someone out there is bored and has a digital camera... Just need a shot of the driver side vaccuum hoses on the carb and intake...
poppycock 06-16-2002, 06:29 PM did you look at the diagram under the hood?
punkskalar 06-16-2002, 06:45 PM Diagram under hood... I would, but umm, its not there anymore... Apparently it came off, thanks for a reply poppy... Anyone else? I could probably use a pic of that as well if anyone has it...
Wilson 06-17-2002, 11:12 PM One of the local sami gurus was saying that there is a switch on the tranny that engages the secondary's in 5th gear only. So to get them to work, you would have to wire around/through it, or use a dash mounted switch.
punkskalar 06-20-2002, 12:45 PM Hrmmm, lets see... so if I wire this switch up to a toggle, i should theoretically be able to kick in the secondary in all gears once it builds proper vaccuum correct? Ill have to check that out, anyone else ever do this?
Hugh
Shawn_C 06-22-2002, 01:37 PM Never heard of the hole switch thing. When I had the stock carb on my secondary would not kick in soon enough so I picked up a little trick from Wheelers off road. between the valve vocer and the carb there is a little hour glass type of vacuum pod. I think it is brown and white maybe? Anyway pull the pod off and plug the two hoses with screws. This makes the secondary open up much sooner. You may want to check and see if your accelartor pump went out. You can do this buy leaving the motor off and looking down the throat of the carb and pulling on the accelartor cable. If the gas just dribbles out or doesn't come out at all you need a new pump. I'm assuming also that you have already fixed that vent tube deal, that you can buy from any of the vendors for like 10.00.
punkskalar 07-01-2002, 08:11 AM Vent Tube What? Thats new to me...
Anyhow, i can manually operate the throttle and watch the pump squirt gas into the first barrel, so its not the pump... When the engine is running, I can open the second barrel manually and watch it pull gas as well, still think its not opening and i have all the vaccuum lines hooked up correctly... Im gonna try putting the tranny in 5th, with the t-case in neutral and see if the secondary opens up.... Theoretically the carb should think the tranny is in 5th and putting power through, so this should work right? I guess if after this it doesn't work, ill pull it off and rebuild it... Ive been at Jellico Rock Crawling Championship and then at myrtle beach for about a week, so I guess ill have some time to get to this thing tommorrow maybe...
Shawn_C 07-01-2002, 06:11 PM Dude I'm telling you take the vacuum pod off that I described and and plug the two lines you will notice a huge difference. It happens as the 1.3's get old they can't develop the vacuum to pull that secondary open all the time. Trust me Gary Wheeler from Wheelers off road told me this trick directly. if it don't work you can still put the pod back in and rebuild it. I just don't wanna see you do a lot of work for nothing.
Z_speed96 07-02-2002, 12:53 PM Shawn C,
Do you have pics of the little thing you talking about???
Shawn_C 07-02-2002, 05:58 PM nope but itis the only hour glass shaped pod on the valve cover side of the carb. there will be a very short hose on each end of it.
punkskalar 07-07-2002, 08:26 AM Thanks guys, i have appreciated all the advice... Tried plugging those hoses, but to no avail... You are right on one thing though, there is zero vaccuum at the lines going to the secondary... I pulled it off, blew out all the lines and ports and still no freaking luck... This engine should build good vaccuum, it only has about 50,000 miles on it... I found a reciept for a new engine in the glove box along with the mileage... This tinkering and going nowhere bit starts getting old... Makes a 1.6 FI swap pop into my mind, just to know what I got... Oh well, keep tinkering I guess...
Shawn_C 07-07-2002, 01:29 PM What ever you do don't buy a friggin weber I hate mine. As soon as I get my gears and tires paid for I'm going FI it's the only way to go.
