: 460 Carb, intake, manifolds opinions
ShawnM 09-14-2007, 03:59 PM What intake should I run with my 795 cfm edelbrock carb? Currently I have D3VE heads on a D1VE block with a D5VE intake. Exhaust manifolds are from a '69 T-Bird. Everything in the motor is stock right now. I'd install a cam to help with the carb, intake, headers if needed. Going forward I'll be stroking but for now I need a reliable combo to keep me moving.
Also I need headers that would hug the block to clear my buggy frame rails, what would be the best ones to install?
fastbigblockford 09-14-2007, 04:35 PM as far as an intake, you didnt list what cam you are running, so i will tell you in my opinion the best all around intake for those motors is the Weiand Stealth, works from the basement to 6800 right out of the box, and my old one with some portwork and some D0VE heads would go 7400 without complaints. As far as headers for a tight fit, try Sandersons...i think they make the tightest clearance headers out there.

SwampMonster 09-14-2007, 06:32 PM I like the edelbrock performer or the performer RPM if you want to run high in the RPM range. Ive never run the weiand but i know they are good. If you so some work on the D3ve heads they will flow the same or better than d0ve heads. They are based on the same cast with the d3ve being later and have a hump in the exhaust side. Grind out the hump and have cheap d0ve heads. You might not need that much carb untill you get it stroked.
Jrod-13 09-14-2007, 11:33 PM wieand stealth is BY FAR the best intake out there for a BBF(for what your doing), and do your self a favor, and ditch your current choice of carb..
as far as headers, if your looking for long tubes, the 83-87 4wd headers tuck in fairly close to the motor..

What is the downfall of my carb? This engine will see little trail use for the time being. I'm using it for now to get everything running and fitted into the frame.
masterbeavis 09-15-2007, 04:20 PM It is not considered a very good offroad carb. You are going to get this from everybody unless you say you are runnng a quadrajet, or motorcraft 2100.

I've been on the hunt for a good quadrajet but haven't come up with anything yet. I have the 1904 now and will just be using it for testing. I have a 2100 I think on the 360 in the '76 F250 I picked up awhile back.

Hate all you want, but I have had good experiences with 2-4 bbl motorcrafts.
Beat95YJ 09-15-2007, 05:06 PM I am switching the oe manifold (or whatever cast iron pos is on it) for a RPM air gap in the near future. I will update everyone on its performance.
I worked with the engineer that is redesigning the weiand manifolds on several projects in the past. I will not be buying them.

when I build my 460 in the 74 I am gonna go single plane rpm(building for propane)
82F100SWB 09-15-2007, 07:16 PM I run a performer RPM on my 460, below a 1411, with a summit cam that's too small for the rpm it turns... I've had great luck with the Edelbrock off road, but, probably only because it used to only have about 4 psi of fuel pressure, and wouldn't fill the bowls. Since I've cured that, it probably has only run 5-6 hours, and that's pretty much all been for mud racing and moving it around the shop, that sort of thing. I did the cam and intake, and an early timing set all in one shot, but, it's a whole different engine compared to stock.
I'm soon going to have to rip it out and take it apart as the oil pressure just hasn't been the same since the cam swap(5-6 hours running on that too) and I now only have 10 psi @ hot idle, 20@ 2K rpm, and before the cam, this engine had 60 @ hot idle... I finally broke down and put a real guage on it today... I had been hoping that the stock sending unit had just gone wacky, as I was spinning this thing 6K all summer...
As for headers, the long tubes for my chassis are fairly tight, don't mind the ugy welds(Almost ashamed to say, but, I learned to stick weld doing that) but, here's what mine(hedmans) looks like from the bottom:
