I picked up a full floater Dana 60 out of what I was told was a 1977 F250 (got it for next to nothing so I didn't ask too many questions). I pulled the shafts & took off the spindle nut expecting to find a lock washer and another spindle nut as shown on the dana website. Instead all I got was one spindle nut & the outer bearing & there isn't even room for another spindle nut. Were some axles assembled like this? First axle from a Ford I ever messed with:D

I havent messed with the coveted hp d60, but I had a d44hd in a '76 and it had two spindle nuts with plenty of room.

I am pretty sure he is talking about a rear axle...

look for the BOM on the rear of pass side tube. clean the gunk off and scrape it clean, look for a 7 digit # starting with a 60, then run that to see exactly what it was originally made for, not necessarily what it came out of.

Sounds like one of the races isn't seated all the way, or possibly the wrong races were used. In any case, Ask yourself this simple question?

Is it possible that this is why you got it for next to nothing?

No way did it come from the factory like that.

In any case, Hooptytank is dead on. Find the BOM, determine what it came out of, and then take the hub bearings and races to Napa, compare them with what is supposed to be on it, and go from there. While you're there, pick up the rest of the locking hardware(washer&outer nut).

Still sounds like a pretty good deal, just have to do a bit of homework, and you will probably want to replace those bearings anyways, right?
