: The Rubicon in a Suburban?
chvyhs 06-16-2002, 09:23 PM I'm not going to try doing the entire trail. I just want to see as much as I possibly can with as little body damage as I can get away with. I'm trying to find information about the Rubicon. I'm stationed on Camp Pendleton in San Diego and I want to do a family trip to the Rubicon. I have a 1990 3/4 ton suburban with 6" of lift, 38" TSL Radials, and rough trails aren't aren't out of the question. The trip I want to plan is more for sight seeing and camping with the family. Where can I get useful maps, GPS coordinates and directions to the trail head. Do you know if there are any full size trips planned that I might be able to get with? I would like to go to Spider Lake in particular. Thanks for anything.
The Jerk 06-16-2002, 09:55 PM dooable? YES! time consuming? YES body damage? PROBABLY, fun factor trying? AMAZING
all kidding aside yes it is feesable just takes teh right lines and patients too. jiMMy
Big Rich 06-16-2002, 09:59 PM When are you planning to make the trip. The trees are plenty close in many areas. I've seen a few full size pick ups in, but most end up with damage or major parts failure. It would be interesting to watch.

LordRatner 06-16-2002, 10:11 PM Please dont, for the sake of the people behind you. Our group made the mistake of allowing an xj (3 ince lift, stock tires, THATS IT) go, he was from isreal, and it was a once in a life time chance. Well, it slowed us down a total of 5 hours, he tore 2 shocks off, cant open his rear doors, no more tail lights, and alot of angry people behind us. we even built ramps for him
Rich, were you there this week? I met.... uh... god I hate names.... the guy who helps you with calrocs.... sponser stuff i think, cool guy, a rig he was with... or his... i forgot.... broke down and my bud welded it for him. hope the arena event goes well... man i wanna see that crane
Sillyneck 06-16-2002, 10:14 PM I think I could wheel a burb into spyder just as fast as my heep. and I don't think body damage would be too bad other than maybe the 90* and alligator pit. once you get to the slabs I think it would be a joke. Disclaimer for the sake of your burb: then again I have no idea what I am talking about and nobody should ever believe anything I say :D:D
on that note...enjoy :D
rochog 06-16-2002, 10:15 PM chvyhs, must be a DEVIL DOG, welcome I would say body damage and some u-joints at a min.:usa:

Aha!! So that's where my burb disappeared to when you swapped motors. Nothing like a road trip to try it out, eh? :D :flipoff2: :D :flipoff2: :D
LordRatner 06-16-2002, 10:22 PM like i said, i suck with names... he was there.... 3 rigs with calrocs on them. i might have even seen you there, but i dont know. they were there with one guys father i believe... also a nice guy

Yes I went in this weekend. Spent friday night on the slab above the box and then into buck on sat am (early) 12 years since I had been to buck, forgot the way onto the slabs above buck, so drove down old sluice, jump out just before it got to nasty. fun trip all weekend. (thanks UgetIt and Manic) That Was Robert and NAPA will be lots of fun.

Yup I saw it:mad:   not good, I got lucky and was able to use the high bypass where he was stuck.....then had to wait on about 10 rigs doing the bypass around this guy:rolleyes: if you want to take a rig in with p235's do it in the middle of the week when the trail is near empty, don't be rude and do it like I saw this sat.....

LordRatner 06-16-2002, 10:36 PM Sorry Seabass, i really am, We all wanted him to turn back and leave, but due to his circumstances, and the fact he was really humble and jazzed about being there, we couldnt do it... we used every bypass we could while I was there, and surprisingly, I was able to get him through most of the hard stuff before they took even more time getting the ramps... Not bad for a dumb teen.
Once again, sorry about the hold up.
Oh ya, I am sorry, he DID have a rear locker. Forgot.
Big Rich 06-16-2002, 10:39 PM Jimmy as we we're leaving the slabs above the box sat am, we saw your gear on the rocks but decide not to wake you up. Bob was not the one needing help, it was Robert Daly, what broke on his jeep? Bob made it into Buck Sat afternoon.

Rich wow, thanks, too bad dustin didnt have the same heart you did because about 8 am (3 hours of sleep) he drove over and laid on his horn waking me and craig up! good times always! yeah i didnt think it was bob, he was stopped in teh shade when i stoped to say hello and show him the new crusier. jiMMy
LordRatner 06-16-2002, 10:45 PM no, bob wasnt broke, someone with him (i think) was, uh. it was the (technical term) thingie that connected the steering to the wheels..... lol, got that?

about 200' behind him were some kids in a 96-99 grand cherokee, STOCK! they thought the trail was easy.....came in the 2wd way of McKinny? Pat told them to turn around as here is where iut gets hard, they did and they were drunk and lost and couldn't find there way out......we were going to follow them out cause Ian30 had no front gears[broke] and we didn't know that way.....we stopped trying to follow them after they took the wrong trail the 3rd time and just went out loon....I'm not still mad, I might have donre the same thing had I been in your shoes....might:D

LordRatner 06-16-2002, 10:52 PM i dont think it was the tie rod, i know that part, but ya, it was repaired by welding just the part to heat it, bending it back into shape, and then welding that pole to it. John (the guy who welded it) went at it, cuz he hadnt used the welder yet. looked funny stuffing his head into the wheel well with a welders helmet on
Aggro 06-16-2002, 11:21 PM for what it's worth... I took my bone stock 95 dodge to spider with nary a scratch with 285x75x16's. And have alos taken my 01 stock ram to ellis creek with no problems or damage. Just have to choose your lines and be careful.
Red Chevy Girl 06-17-2002, 07:44 AM There are definetly some tight spots going in to spider the first time I went in I went dent free in a chevy PU so it is possible for full sizes just pick good lines if you try.
You think a Sub can make it through pinch rock? Seems like there'd be extreme body damage or a high centered situation. This weekend was my first trip through the Rubicon and although I went through without any spotting I found the trail more difficult than I expected.
Jes
Lemoore-on 06-17-2002, 08:23 AM Chvyhs, Try a different trail first, There are plenty of nice trails out there that would offer some spectacular country and some good fishing/camping opertunities for the family. Red lake comes to mind. It would be chalenging in a burb and its about 5 hours closer to you. Im not too familar with trails to the south of me(besides Johnson Valley) But I'm sure there are some nice ones even closer than Red lake.
The Con is a verry popular place with lots of traffic on weekends you would cause traffic jams that would piss alot of people off. :(
withamc 06-17-2002, 11:20 AM Swamp Lake (NE of Fresno) wouldn't be hard in a 'Burb, Also you could run Sherman Jeep Trail (NE of Kernville) or Dusy-Ershim.

did dustin make it to Buck island and then back home with that tie-rod???? (I hope)
Brutpwr 06-17-2002, 05:32 PM I have never taken in a full size or even followed one in on the Rubicon. I would guess pinch rock would not be a problem if its not to torn up??? I think the problem would be those two trees that are close together after the slabs (can't remember their trail name but they are the ones that have rub marks and no bark (probaby from full sizes being dragged thru). I'm guessing you could drop off the slabs and avoid that tight spot but I'm not sure. You would have to drop in from the slabs where that first lake/pond is and make your way around the perimeter on either side (I know there is an existing trail on one side but have not driven around the hold thing).
Jason :)

or come in through McKinny any car can get to Ellis Creek:rolleyes:
chvyhs 06-17-2002, 06:50 PM I'm not too worried about a little bit of rubbing. I'll have full length rock sliders on before I try it. I did TDS this summer and had no problems doing all of the medium trails (I think the red tape trails). I also did the off road for hope, those trails were a joke!. I'm going to Hollister next weekend. I'll play in the Mini Rubicon so I can get my fix for now.
All I want to do is make it to spider lake, check out the slabs, and watch people do some serios damage to their own rigs. I plan on getting there on a monday and leaving on friday. I also know how to get out of the way if I'm holding some one else up. Which maps should I get? When does it get too cold to camp?

If you have the equipment any time of year is good, but if you want to watch the action in the box, weekends are much busier, and up until labor day the heaviest traveled. If you pick the time, you should be able to get someone from around these parts to guide you in, especially if you supply the beer and steaks. Shoot me a PM if your interested.

willysfreak 06-17-2002, 09:04 PM HUMMERS HAVE DONE THE CON, SO AS FAR AS THE WIDTH FACTOR FOR THE BURB, IT'LL WORK. do it!

are you comin up for blazer fest?..its at hollister..not this weekend but the following weekend..
66CJdean 06-17-2002, 09:39 PM It wouldn't be so tight of a fit if he goes in through Wentworth. There will be a few spots that he might have to stack but there is an easy way around those spots. After that getting to spider is simple.
Brutpwr 06-17-2002, 09:57 PM Well I have not gone in thru Wentworth since the early 90's but I don't think you'd want to bring a Suburban in that way. There are some large boulders and stairsteps to deal with. If you didn't get high centered you'd hang up the rear of a Suburban really easy on that route.
Jason :)
chvyhs 06-17-2002, 10:19 PM Yeah, I'm planning on going to Blazerfest. I'm hoping to get more information there. I have a friend on base that's from the area. I'm going to hit him up too. He's supposed to be on the Rubicon right now.
It sound do'able to me. I've been working on the rear overhang problem. I was thinking about a 2" body lift and relocate the fuel tank up.
I might want in on this burb trip....keep us all informed on the date you go in
What are you thinking? I might come out the size of a grand cheroke?!

I go this rout most of the time and now of the 2 spots you are talking about but there is a simple rout arround them both to the left. After that is just knowing where to go once you get on the slabs so you don't get lost.:D
Big Rich 06-18-2002, 08:17 PM Now somebody says go left. Teusday after Memorial I went up wentworth and keep taking the routes to the right, not one of those ended up easy, at least not in what I am driving.
