: Mile Marker D60 locking hubs (are they really this bad)???
bigdude 06-17-2002, 06:05 AM A brief summary:
I took my Jeep to SC for it's maiden voyage. After a few obstacles at Ken Shupes playground we headed up to a trail called "The Hush Hole". The final obstacle is a bitch and I was hitting it pretty hard.
:POP:
Driver's side Mile Marker locking hub, insides shot. Switch it out to a Superwinch spare. Finish the trail. Before loading the Jeep at Ken's I try the left side of an obstacle I ran before. I get hung up and crank the wheel
:POP:
Passenger side Mile Marker locking hub, insides shot (same as other). I call it a day (slight bend in tie-rod also :D)
Keep in mind I have a 4-banger, 5.13s, NP 231, and only 38" TSLs. I had heard that Mile Marker locking hubs were weak but this was ridiculous. Anyone else experience this? They are lifetime warranty but I don't want to run them because they give it up easier then a girl with low self esteem. I will try to exchange them for Warn's. Did I just get a bad set?
scoobydann 06-17-2002, 06:25 AM I have to second the motion that they SUCK A$$.
story:
Just get shocks installed decide to do a little testing. Get tire up against a little bump, say a foot. bump the gas. POP! think its the locker---nope, drive it home take it apart and this is what i got

its BS i tell you----im glad im not the only one w/ this prob---well i guess i have a spare now
broncorob 06-17-2002, 07:26 AM My maiden voyage with the bigbronco I blew a ujoint cap. I think I must have screwed up on the installation. Replaced the fawker on the trail only to find out that wheel wasn't pulling. Pulled the hub and little pieces of metal fell out. Promptly bought some Warn Premiums and never looked back
Go2Guy 06-17-2002, 07:27 AM I've got some Warn's available if anyone is interested- just went to drive flanges on my rig.

That is EXACTLY how BOTH of my hubs broke. Same damn thing. The guy who sold me them recommended Mile Marker over Warn (and he deals both), now we'll see if he decides to warranty them and swap me for some Warns. I'm wondering if Mile Marker is aware of this type of failure and how often it occurs?
I mean I wanted a driveline fuse, but this was ridiculous. They gave it up about as easily as my old D30 260 joints when I had 36's.
FearMe 06-17-2002, 07:36 AM I'm sure drive flanges are the best choice. However, in the land of locking front hubs what's the strongest? I ruined a front 60 Warn and need to get a replacement. Warn, Milemarker or Superwinch?
Scoutillac 06-17-2002, 07:45 AM Do you even have to ask Roger? Get the warn hubs. I killed my mile markers before I popped the u-joint, with the warns, I broke the joint and axle with no ill effect to my Warn hub

We ran Superwinch in ERoCC and the stub shaft shattered before the hub let go.
I'll be running Superwinch and keep the Warns (if I get them swapped for my brokens) as spares. I would say....
AVOID Mile Marker, I've never seen a locking hub take LESS abuse before breaking.
pcorssmit 06-17-2002, 11:22 AM If you plan to stay with the 30 spline, the internals on the (discontinued) OE spicer ones are much beefier than the Warns. The only real downfall to the Spicers is that they are subject to drive line bind, and are difficult to unlock w/a front locker, unlike the Warn ones.

lt1yj 06-17-2002, 11:41 AM I agree with pcorssmit. My Milemarkers didn't break internally, but I've gone through literally dozens of bolts. I break at least 3 bolts per trip per side.
I put the original Spicer hubs back in and have not had a single problem. I replaced the Orings in the outer hub and polished the housing and they work pretty smooth but are still hard to unlock.
jeeper111 06-17-2002, 05:15 PM does anyone know if the rockwell versions have this problem?

this is good to hear--cause due to some bad $$ situation i had to get these....they didnt seem too much better than the MM's but they went through Las Cruses no problem except the hubs stick out farther than the tires so i scraped a nice chunk outta one.
85toyboy 06-17-2002, 05:19 PM I once stripped all the spines off the inside hub of a mile marker on my old dana 60. Some rocks got stuck in the breaks when the truck was stuck in the ditch. The axle didn't stop turning and the mile marker let go. They warenteed it without any hassels.
