: I have a question about TJ coils
kaseym 09-18-2007, 10:07 PM I am running 4" tj coils and having a problem with them falling out.....My question is am i able to mount them to the top and bottom buckets to hold them in with out stretching them or breaking a spring? Any help you guys could give me on what to do or what springs to run will be greaty appreciated.
jeeper8650 09-19-2007, 12:31 AM they will be fine if you do that.. That is how my rear springs are held in place and no problems yet. I figure its a spring its meant to stretch and compress right.
TBItoy 09-19-2007, 06:56 AM Limit Straps. or use your shocks as limiters (no optimal)....... My suggestion, use your brain, Don't be dumb.
chadjeep 09-19-2007, 08:20 AM definately get limiting straps. I would not use your shocks. Limiting straps are all of $30 a piece. You'll be done with the problem for about $100.
kaseym 09-19-2007, 08:33 AM I have limit straps and use my shocks also for limit straps at full articulation....but for some reason when i drop my pass side reaer wheel and pull my driver side rear wheel my pass side spring falls out.

Which peice of shit is yours in the picture? Use your brain and dont talk unless you have some real insight:flipoff2:
JDunn 09-19-2007, 09:04 AM Just clamp on the top and the bottom. I run 4" TJ coils and it works great for me.
rockjamer 09-19-2007, 04:21 PM I welded a peace of tube on the lower coil bucket it is 5in long that way I can run a longer shock and when the coil is on it's way back down the tube guieds it in to place. It has worked well with no problems. And never catch a coil for a t.j. at both ends. It will shorten their life due to the streching. They were made to compress onley.

Are you using a rear sway bar?...

No rear sway bar
4x4not 09-19-2007, 09:39 PM So you HAVE limiting straps? Are you sure you even know what they are? If you do, they are too damn long.
kirbyiv 09-19-2007, 09:43 PM definately get limiting straps. I would not use your shocks. Limiting straps are all of $30 a piece. You'll be done with the problem for about $100.
damn you got raped... i paid about 17 each for mine from pyrotect...they are triple layer too.
IV WHLN 09-19-2007, 11:12 PM I'm not a fan of clamping coils top and bottom so this is what I did with 3.5" TJ rear coils on my YJ...
Not the best picture but I use these coil retainers on the bottom

and limit straps.

No problems yet. This set up allows me to use a 12" travel shock and saves space with the bumpstop inside the coil like a factory TJ set up.

Thats one of your problems...
Sillyneck 09-21-2007, 10:28 AM capturing coils top and bottom is a great way to gain stability and increase sidehill capacity.
If the coil is short and stiff you'll see a significant loss in down travel. TJ front coils are generally long and soft enough to be captured completely and still allow you to max out other aspects of your suspension before they stop stretching.
the rears give a little less but with the 4" coils captured top and bottom I think you could still tap out a set of 10-12" shocks if they're still mounted in a stockish way.
I'd trade the travel for stability any day.

Word. I'd much rather lift a tire than get that floppy feeling. Which is also why I will use torsion/sway bars forever (i.e. Antirock)
