I am planning on swapping a ford 9" into my TJ and tried searching for which vehicles made good donor vehicles. The only thing I came up with was the 66-77 Broncos had a WMS to WMS of 58". I was planning on going with something more along the lines of 65" WMS to WMS with a 5x5.5 bolt pattern. The front will also be swapped out with a Dana 44 at about the same time. This weekend while at the junkyard I found an 81 Ford pickup with a 9", but it had the 5x4.5 bolt pattern. What vehicles would be good donors of a 9" with 31 splines, 5x5.5, and a 65" width?

find a 78 or 79 ford truck 9" rear, HP44 front.you have to get your front out of a ford unless you want to re tube, 9" rears came in almost any older ford truck

if you search the for sale section there is a guy selling a currie hp9 for a tj and a currie 44 also set up for a tj. seemed like a good deal.

Only problem is I would have to regear since I have a 4-banger and I don't really have that much money laying around. I am just going to work on getting the axles and building them as time and money permits.

I got my 9" out of an 81 F150. It is 65" WMS, big bearing housing. I only paid $100 for it and all it really needed was new brakes. Of course you will have to weld on the brackets for CA and coils.

(I know I'm a newb and what I say don't mean anything, but maybe you guys will find a use for this)

at the risk of telling you something that you might already know, have you check into having a 9" housing made to your spec? they're really dirt cheap, everybody and thier brother fabs 9" housings. And it's not like you're going to keep 30 yr. old stock axle shafts, anyway, right?.

unless that truck was a ranger or a special Virginia Edition Ford, the rear end would be 5 on 5.5. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: ...i got one for my truck out of a 82 F150. the truck was a 6CYL. it is a bg bearing and 31 spline axles. the only down side to it is the 2.72:1 gears that it has. lemme tell you 2.72:1 sucks with 35's.

I have thought about that, but a new axle would run me close to $2k and I figure I can get one from the junkyard for about $100. I know I will end up spending quite a bit replacing bearings and seals, but I can do that over a period of time, plus I hope to learn something during the process.

The gears don't really matter to me for what I plan to do since the price of them is not factored in. If I keep my current axles I would have to regear them. I plan to run 35's or 36's so I would have to upgrade the Dana 35c, plus the lowest I could go in gears is 4.88. I plan to run around a 5.13 in the 9" for a 35-36" tire. Thanks for the responses so far

yea thats they way togo on a budget.. you can get alloy axles from moser for like $298 a pair about $60 for the bearings. and if you get a normal center section you can fit upto 33 spline axles, get lucky and find one with the big bearing case or nodular case and you can fit 35 spline easy... spools are under $200.. disk brake stuff is available at tsm or bcbroncos...

I read somewhere that the nodular case had the letter "N" stamped in them. Where on the case would I find that? Also, How do I tell if it is big bearing?

The stock noudular "N" cases are not too common. They have a "N", about 1" tall just above the pinion support, on the outside. You can run a 35 spline spool in a stock 2 7/8, or 3.062 bearing bore housing, but its best to just fork over the $330 for a good 3.25 bearing aftermarket noudular case.

The big bearing ends have a 3.150 axle bearing dimeter, and either 3/8 or 1/2 holes.

Since it sounds like your on a budget, get a late 70s early 80s truck housing. Most all of these are 31 spline, 5x5.5, big bearing/big housing. They are cheap, easy to find, and have near equal length shafts, so only 1 spare is needed.

Oh, F100s had 9"s with 5x4.5 :flipoff2:

if you goto mosers site they have the "backing retainer plate thingy" measurements for various 9s.. i cant recall the stats for the big bearing unit, but its in their site somewhere... i think its 3-1/2x2-3/8" on center for the four bolts, but its better to look it up for sure..
