: Hotwheels Cage Buildup
hotwheelsYJ 09-19-2007, 07:58 AM So I've been wheeling way to long with just the factory YJ cage.
Now that my kids are going with me a lot more it's time to add a little safety.
I ripped out the old bars so I could start fresh instead of building off 14 yr old factory junk.
All tubing is 1.75 x .120 HREW cause I can't afford DOM.
First days progress:

Big thanks to Travis & Chris for all their help
kirbyiv 09-19-2007, 12:37 PM looks good so far...I hope it isnt finished
D'Mann 09-19-2007, 07:55 PM looks good so far...I hope it isnt finished
First days progress:
I think that means more to come.
Bushwhacker 09-19-2007, 08:07 PM Are you not running full or 1/2 hard doors? Looks like they wont close where the front legs are.
D'Mann 09-19-2007, 10:30 PM Looks like they'll close. YJ's got a few inches to play with, just can't crank the window if it's full doors... unless you open them.
hotwheelsYJ 09-20-2007, 09:01 AM Got some more done.
I'm running 1/2 hard doors they fit fine with about 3/4" between them & the tube.
Any thing it's missing?
I need some ideas about how to add "B" pillar diagonals/harness mounts. But I still need to be able to get in the back seat with the top on
Thanks

dcswindler4 09-20-2007, 11:29 AM im no cage expert but im diggin it...keep it coming. how much tubing do you plan on using after its all said and done?
hotwheelsYJ 09-20-2007, 12:14 PM Some where around 100 feet. I'll let ya know tomorrow. all the bending ought to be finished up tonight. Then the welding begins.
Any thoughts on the harness bars / diagonals?
OlBlueCJ7 09-20-2007, 12:23 PM As far as harness bars, I've seen where people run a bar from the DS B-pillar towards the passenger side, but then but a 90° bend in to the floor at the inside edge of the driver's seat. Leaves a little opening from someone to crawl between the front seats, but doesn't offer any diagonal bracing.
My suggestion? Open the tailgate/hatch & make 'em get in that way.
prostock3 09-20-2007, 09:29 PM it looks like the one front brace below your dash is right in front of the gas and brake pedal, i would think that would get annoying

Thats just a peice of scrap to hold everything square till its welded.
Fordsux74 09-21-2007, 06:59 AM Cage looks sweet, although that trials motorcycle looks cooler! Dont see to many of them.
tommaho 09-21-2007, 07:29 AM Here's how I did my diagonal and harness bars. Looks like you could do something similar. Node isnt ideal in the school of pure cage design, but I DD the thing and need to run a top & doors with a little seat room. I'm still debating on gusseting at the top of the diagonal & b-pillar.

[edit]
Missed the part about getting into the back seat. I'm not sure there's a good way to make that work with the little bit of space available back there.

lojones 09-22-2007, 01:18 AM A few crossbar ideas ;)

OlBlueCJ7 09-25-2007, 12:56 PM Bump for updates?
blackduramax 09-25-2007, 01:17 PM If you are going to run the factory seats, you could run a tube connecting both B pillars together across the top of the floor board. It would be out of the way and still give you a harness connection point.
lojones 09-25-2007, 01:59 PM I assumed he was talking shoulder harnesses where the bar needs to be up by the shoulders, with the added difficulty of passenger access.
hotwheelsYJ 09-25-2007, 02:55 PM Any last requests from the peanut gallery before we shoot the paint on it?
The middle primered section will have a stainless panel with switches & dome light underneath

OlBlueCJ7 09-25-2007, 03:13 PM How are you tying in the base of the B-pillar? I notice there are no foot plates there like the A & C pillars have?
No harness bar for a passenger?
By all means - feel free to update this again when you get the paint & switch panel finished up.
Very cool cage.
Trailworks 09-25-2007, 03:41 PM Any last requests from the peanut gallery before we shoot the paint on it?
Yup, paint it pink !:flipoff2:
looks good mang !
.
lojones 09-25-2007, 06:51 PM Looks great, very similar to the cage i am finishing up. It's probably already pink by now but i would add the following if it was mine...
stringer from a to b at the floor
stringer from b to c at the tub line
stringer from b to b at the floor
ralphdogg 09-25-2007, 07:35 PM thats pretty fancy. it looks very top heavy.
O|||||||O 09-25-2007, 10:25 PM I would say it was 100% awesome but that would be a lie!:flipoff2:Make the cage symmetrical with a passenger harness and then it would be 100% awesome!:D
hotwheelsYJ 09-26-2007, 09:38 AM Yup, paint it pink !:flipoff2:
looks good mang !
Why would I do that, I don't want to match yours:flipoff2:
No harness bar on the pass side yet. It will have a little more tube added for seat mounts & harnesses whenever Brent (Trailworks) decides to donate a set of seats to my cause!
Jkrause 09-26-2007, 02:52 PM Can someone PLEASE post up the picture .. I can't access what ever pic host he's using ....... surfing at the office sucks !
HEEPJEEP 09-26-2007, 02:57 PM Or just get back to work slacker! :flip:
