How do you tell the difference between a Dodge 61 and a Dodge 60 front axle?

Look at the BOM. Look at the gear ratio. Look at the 61 cast in on the backside of the pumpkin. Look in BillVistas Dana 60 Bible for more info. Its right there on the front page.

All the older dodges also had a build tag under the hood. If it's still there it will tell you what axles it has and the ratio. It will also have engine size, the trans and transfer case listed. It uses easy to understand codes like d60 and TF727.
