View Full Version : Looking for a toolbox--$800 CSPS at Costco or $800 HF model?

Hey guys. My craftsman rollaway is stuffed to the gills and I need more space. I don't want to go Craftsman again because I can only afford the Quiet-Glide line, which I currently have, and it worked okay at first but now the drawers don't really "glide" at all. :shaking:

So, the local HF has the 40 inch, 13 drawer chest for $400 + $300ish for the top box.
http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/itemdisplay/displayItem.do?itemid=90320

The local Costco has the "CSPS" stainless steel box (also 40 inch) for $700 or $800 (can't remember.)
http://www.cspsmetal.com/toolchests/index.html#41S

Which would you pick? I looked at both in the store but at Costco it was up on a shelf so I couldn't inspect it. The one at HF seemed pretty decent, especially for the money (Dual ball bearing sliders on the bigger drawers, etc.)

Anyone have experience with both, or just want to chip in?
All the threads I've found here mainly have people happy with either one, so is it a toss-up?

Thanks.

I would go the HF model. My brother in law bought it and it was way better quality than the Costco unit.

The HF one is a crinkle coat red finish (less scratches), comes with drawer liners and a top rubber mat, and has heavy duty roller bearing drawer slides with very little side to side movement. Also has pretty heavy duty casters on it.

FTR:

I have a craftsman roller ball bearing rollaway set that I actually wat to sell for the HF one. The quality of craftsman one is definatly lower than the HF one.

If its the same brand and type as the unit above I'd say go for it.

I picked up this Husky 41" bottom at HD on closeout for $399:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/toolbox.jpg

It's all ball bearing drawers. I added the 26" Craftsman ballbearing top because I need room to open the breaker box. Works good, stores a bunch of tools.

I've also got a Craftsman project center:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/toolbox001.jpg
That only has the top drawer with ballbearing slides. I pretty much 'stole' it for around $200 as a used floor model one of the local stores was getting rid of. Because it's not as tall as a regular tool chest, it fits nicely under my Sam's Club workbench. I store all my specialty stuff in there; pullers, tap & die set, automotive crap, etc.

I've seen the HF unit and I think it's a lot of bang for the buck. If you're primary interest is in tool storage, I don't think you'll be disappointed. However, if you're really gonna start loading down the drawers, and dragging it all over a 100,000 sq ft shop.....Spend the money and get either Snap-on, Matco, Kennedy, etc. Look on Craig's or in the local pawn shops for deals.

You might want to check out the Clarke HD Gold version. I have two and they are sweet boxes for the money if you ask me. I got my first one on sale at tractor supply. Recently I wanted another and could only find it online so I bought from tool discounter. Be careful about shipping. They quoted me shipping to a business with dock, so make sure you double check if you order it to a residence.

If you're not in a hurry, what ebay and craigslist. I've seen some pretty good deals on toolboxs. Seems like the more they cost new, the less they hold their value, and the better deal you can get from some sucker who got raped by the tool truck.

I have that set up with grip latch and a deeper top box + middle box.

I still say HF box is waaaay better.

We have a pair of those big top/bottom combo Stainless CSPS boxes here at work, no issues at all with either one, sliders still work fine, we've overloaded them with tools in the past with no probs. Casters haven't fallen apart either.

Join the Craftsman club (free), and start checking for deals on the Craftsman ball-bearing stuff, should be close to the same price for similar storage size when it's on sale.

I have the Costco box and love it. I have not bought anything from Harbor Freight that has ever had much quality in it. The Costco box seems much higher quality than most I have looked at. Besides, try pricing stainless steel to the Chinese rook a rike steel. It is about twice as much. After the paint starts wearing off you have a rust bucket and chinese crappy paint all over.

My two cents says to go with the stainless box at Costco

Just wanted to say thanks for all the input. I may wait and see--if I get another 15% off coupon in the mail, the cost of the HF stuff will be pretty compelling. It seems like either box is likely to be a step up in quality from the basic Craftsman stuff I have now, which is okay, just too small.

I am a member of Craftsman Club, but truthfully it seems like you have to jump to the "pro" line to get decent quality, which is too much $$$. At that point just find a used Snap-On...

Yup. Similar choice worked for me. Forget Snap-On... couldn't even afford NEW Matco, Kennedy, etc. but landed this UNUSED Kennedy from a surplus/"scratch & dent" supply house... 52" Kennedy 12-drawer Maintenance Pro... Ball-bearing drawer runners... Totally solid quality.

Best List = $1,430... Sale = $600 + Shipping.
There's a thumb-nail sized dimple on right rear panel and a few minor scuff marks on it. Great quality/price; so I ordered a 27" Kennedy 5-drawer Maintenance Pro Chest too...

Really GREAT deals out there. Surplus sales takes a long while to find but it works for me. Give it a try first before buying HF or Costco cabinets.

Craigslist is your friend. Just check it when you go to work everyday and you will find a gem in the rough within a couple of weeks. Lots of people don't know the cost of these and sell for cheap. Estate sales and such - not trying to gain from the dead dudes but their family listed the price so someone has to get a good deal on it.

i just picked up a stainless csps box from costco the other day. it is by far the nicest thing i have ever seen that has come from taiwan. the fit is perfect on it. i looked at the craftsman boxes that were close to twice as much and the csps box has way smoother drawers and a better fit. the struts on the top lid are also a nice feature that i didn't see on the craftsman. after shopping around, i think for $750 the costco box is about as good of a deal as you are going to find for a quality box.

I just picked up a 40" 14 drawer craftsman lower as a damaged unit. $850 griplatch box for $270... Got it home, and in a half hour, you can't tell it was damaged, including assembling the casters and pull handle, and moving enough stuff in the garage to get it rolled in. So far so good, but truth be told, I was in HF, and started comparing their 40" box to my craftsman... If I had to buy at non clearance price, i would go for the HF in a heartbeat over the craftsman... The drawers seem to be heavier, and the slides are better. On the deeper drawers, there are two sets of slides per side to hold the wieght. This one should be on the list of good HF tools thread...

I am on the list of "would love to have a snap-on box, but haven't won the Donald Trump Lottery." If I made a living out of my tool box, there would be no question.

costco also offers a larger version of the stainless CSPS ox, i would say atleast 60" it's big, it's solid, it rolls smooth, and even with every drawer stuffed the drawers still glide like butter, the locks are the only part i don't like. And i got it for $900 something dollars. Similar snap on boxes top and bottom go for like 6K and craftsman even like 2K, CSPS gets my vote, i'll be buying another one soon. I use the box for a living too:flipoff2:

damn, i wish i would have known about the bigger box. i would have gotten that. i thought the box was bigger the last time i looked at it so i must have seen the bigger one. does your costco carry it in stock or do you have to order it? the csps box i got is way better quality than any craftsman i have looked at and can only assume that it is also far better than a hf box.

Noticed in this month's Craftsman Club flyer that their 40" Griplatch top/bottom combo was down from $1400 to $900 or $1000. Anyone have an opinion on "Griplatch"? Since I don't move my boxes much, if at all, it seems kinda gimmicky to me. Thoughts? So far I think the HF box is my top choice.

My Dad has the same box and LOVES it. We've got it stuffed full of tools and every drawer still functions great. At work my Dad has a set of High end Craftsman boxes and he likes this better then his box at work. One of the things I like is the larger drawers at the bottom have 4 rails supporting the drawers instead of 2 like the narrower drawers. I would not hesitate to buy one.

Sorry, my friend... but I only received your message about an hour ago.
The net has been very flakey this past week.

BTW... for everyone else this is a copy of the question...
I read your posts and was wondering what site you went to for those boxes? It looked like quite a deal! I have been searching the web and have yet to find any deals like those. Thanks.
... and my reply...
Hi,
I got VERY lucky right about then...
The link will show exactly how lucky you can get... if you're patient enough.
(BTW the drill press took almost 3 months of "lurking"... The price was so good that I bought the other stuff so that he wouldn't try to back out of the deal... Everything was GREAT value IMHO.)
Link--> THE ASYLUM!... Workshops & Tools for DIY MadMen. (http://www.zorce.com/zforums/viewtopic.php?p=22167#22167)

The vendor is a "Surplus, Used & Scratch & Dent" outfit called "Industry Recycles" out of Sarasota, Florida on eBay.

I also bought three other Waterloo 42" roller cabinets from them and the Kennedy Chest (That one was slightly damaged.) Waterloo is not as good as the Kennedy but still great for the price... $275 - $300.00 each.

Here's what they have at the moment:

http://cgi.ebay.com/KENNEDY-WALL-MOU...QQcmdZViewItem ... $200.00 Starting bid.

Your best bet is to live on eBay, Froogle... and Google too. Do simultaneous searches. Sometimes you get lucky.

Good luck.
Hope this helps... BTW if any of you do hook up, tell Dave that Wade Mitchell (from Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean) sent you. (Damn sure he'll be VERY surprised.)

I just went and picked up the 41" SS CSPS top and bottom from Costco for 750, the comparible HF unit with the 20% coupon was 550$. I liked the fact that its stainless and the shelves have sorta a "lock" on the last bit of travel to keep the drawers from sliding out when being moved around. It also came with drawer liners. Im happy with it so far, just if I could remember what drawer I put my flathead screwdrivers in?...

I will put in another vote for the HF model. I have one and would argue that it is better quality than what craftsman comes out with. All drawers have two sliders per side, the casters are very strong and greasable, and it comes with drawer mats. Mine came in at $320 for the main bottom chest. It was on sale and (and not even the best sale I have seen on them) and I think I added a 15% coupon or something. It has been a year and a half or so. Don't know if you have made up your mind yet or not, but thanksgiving is coming up soon and the sale afterward at HF ususally puts these on a great sale (get there early). I believe they even had a select number of the HF boxes in the stainless versions at some of the stores for their after thanksgiving sale last year. They were in the same price range as the red ones new price during the sale. You will not regret this tool box. Yeah, I know.. harbor freight... but trust those of us that have them, not those that have broken a hf screw driver and condemned everything else. They are great roll aways and even better once you see the sale price. Not everything at HF is created equal.

Anyone have an opinion on "Griplatch"? Since I don't move my boxes much, if at all, it seems kinda gimmicky to me. Thoughts? So far I think the HF box is my top choice.

The Griplatch is alright. IME it functions well, is reliable, and has a quality feel. Once I had a socket roll under the lever arm at the side of the drawer and couldn't open the drawer. Took me forever to figure it out.

On a more general note.....take a close inventory of what you think you'll need and if you've already filled up small-ish boxes do the math. For instance I had already filled two Craftsman 26"W combos (one with intermediate chest). Basic math told me that even tho a 41" box looked kinda big it wasn't gonna gain me much over two 26's (none of this takes into account HEIGHT, I'm just trying to keep it simple). I added up the cubic inches of what I already had and found that my hunch was right. These specs should be readily available; I saw 'em on the HF website and they're all stated in my Craftsman tool catalog.

Most of the 41"W boxes seem to be 18"D, but some have a 16"D top chest. Always look at depth, too.

So, basically what I am geting from this thread is that the Costco and HF boxes are both pretty decent units for the price? Basically you think I should just check out two comperable boxes and buy the one that costs less?

from what i was reading, it sounds like the harbor freight box is as good as a craftsman. i have not seen the hf one first hand but i have seen and studied the craftsman boxes quite a bit. i believe the costco box is far better than the craftsman. that is the reason i bought it. it was an added bonus that it was ALLOT cheaper than a craftsman.

So i was looking at the 44 inch box at HF and they said it is only 11K Cubic inches, does that sound right? that seems like it is a low number compared to the craftsman ones of similar size. i just don't want to get a box that is only slightly larger than what i have now.

I have the smaller of the CSPS boxxes from costco, got it in 04, still works perfect.

Best deal on a tool box I have found! I have the HF side box, got it super cheap but no where near the quality of the CSPS box.

I am still looking for the right deal on a toolbox. I love the idea that I could find a Kennedy for 100 bucks... that makes me drool! I am willing to wait and discover a real deal. That roll around box on ebay went for over $600.00! I would rather find 2 top boxes(bad knee) and I have extra workbench space.
Mostly what I am trying to store would fit 2 large top units. As the tool collection grows (and it will! :D) I can always add the lower units.

the costco boxes are nice. i saw the hf boxes also, but bought the costco box. also, i have heard that sears will have a 3 piece (bottom, mid, top) ball bearing box combo for$299 on the black friday sale. i have NOT confirmed this, so do a google search for leaked black friday ads to confirm. you might also check the hf ad also if you are inclined to go with that one, then use your discount coupon on top of the sale price.

Ditto -- If you are stepping up in tool boxes - go as big as your wallet and garage will fit. Add up the cubic inches and compare that way.

I just bought a new bottom unit for my roll away setup and filled it up in about 30 minutes. I have now reached maximum height, and still need more capacity.

I am still looking. I am on the tightest of budgets. If I have to wait 6 months I will wait. I am wanting to find two top chests like you did for 100 each. I know if I am patient I can and will. 2k is a good deal, but way to rich for my blood.
I am on TTD with a real serious knee injury(out for over a year,so say the doctors) and I have wife/kid combo that makes it difficult to obtain anything let alone 2k worth of toolboxes. Wow...if I did that I think she would kill me. lol Hmmm...

We went last weekend and bought the HF set for my dad. for the $$$, I'd definitely recommend the HF, especially over the craftsman.

I too bought that hf lower box tonight. It was 499 on sale for 399 but if you get their emails you get extra coupons and there was the one above and it is for that box for 299. I used a 10 percent off coupon too and got it for cheaper yet. Seems decent enough for the price but we'll see after I get my current top box and tools in it. But for around 270 its a steal. Call ahead and ask if they still have them though, most stores only carry one or two in stock and the coupon is only good for in store inventory.

crap, well I only paid $20 more than that coupon. I wonder if they would have put my 20% on top of that 299 one though... that would make it $240!

does the HF box anyone else bought wobble alittle bit? I need to either return it and try another one or just shim the casters a bit (cheaper option as the store is 100 miles away). The drawers work perfectly and all the jams look equal around them so I don't know what the deal is.

Picked up the HF 13 drawer lower (90320) this weekend- Now my garage smells like Harbor Freight (cheap Rubber from overseas) because of the rubber mat.

Paid $260 out the door for the box. I used a 15% (discount taken from $399) coupon from the back of the HF ads in conjunction with a rain check I got from the previous $299 coupon.

It was a tough call between the HF lower unit - 90320 ($240) and the Costco CSPS Box on sale $649 ( upper & lower units).
If I add the matching HF upper ($299 -15%) - Its still a $150 savings over the Costco combo.
The other good thing about the HF unit is that I can add the top or a side cabinet whenever I desire.
Also - IIRC - the Full width drawer (top drawer of lower unit) has only a single row of BB rails compared to twin BB rails on the full width drawer of the HF cabinet.

I was so impressed with my first HF cabinet, I now have three of the Harbor Freight $400 boxes. Mine are loaded with very heavy tools. (I have way more tools than most machinists) The other machinists at work couldn't believe the quality for $400.

I have a black krinkle with side box at work and two red krinkle boxes at home with all my mechanic's and body tools. Even fully loaded, the drawers and castors roll smoothly. The top and bottom drawers on these are all double-slides.

Mine didn't seem to wobble even when it was empty. I've got no complaints so far.

Question: Does anyone know of a good textured spray paint that will match the HF red color? I have tried rustoleum and Krylon but they were too light.

My plan is to buy one or two fireproof verticle filing cabinets with one large drawer and two letter drawers and use those as the end boxes. I really want a deep deep drawer for big drills and grinders as well as plastic cases for bits, taps, big sockets, hammers, etc. I want to paint the cabinets to match the main chest.

I will keep you guys posted with the progress if I find a matching spray paint.

I have had the costco CSPS box for about 3 years and lugged it through 4 different residences. It is the one pictured on the first page. It is the bigger of the 2 ($999 now) but i paid like $949 3 years ago. The drawers still open and close smooth even though they are heavy as hell filled with tools. I've got about 200 wrenches in one drawer and it slides with one finger. The ONLY thing i would want better is the lock, it is a cheasy lock, (very few keys too, i can open like 4 other guys boxes i know) BUT since i use it at home i'm not worried about it, if i used this at work, i'd upgrade the lock with one from snap on or whoever sells the lock cylinders w/ keys. I'd buy another one without thinking about it.

I just picked one up tonight. $589 41" wide x 64" tall(with wheels) x 18" deep. It has a mirror finish top so you can see what's in there, 17 drawers and came with enough mats for the drawers. It's built a heck of a lot better than the Crapsman one I looked at over the weekend.

I don't know about a sale but the last time I was at my local Costco (2 weeks ago) they still had a couple in stock.

I can say that since I loaded it up and have used it for a while it is built very well. I was able to get a majority of my tools in it and the non skid pads are awsome. You can pull the drawers in and out as fast as you want and the tools dont budge. I used the extra space to my advantage.

Now my old tool box is great for holding other things such as sprinkler supplies and tools. Things that don't matter as much.
