When I swapped in a 460 into my 86 Bronco, I put on a set of heddman headers. The headers went right where the dipstick is ment to be, so I pluged up the dipstick tube hole for a temp fix, and need to do somthing about it. As I see it, I have a few options,

1) make a conventional dipstick tube out of some copper tubing and wrap it around the headers

2) I have fabricated a sheet metal dash for my Bronco. I could have the dipstick pass through the firewall and be able to check my oil from the drivers seat, or

3) (this is the one I want to figure out) I understand that some european cars have oil level gauges, but I have no idea on how I might rig a sender. Any Ideas?

PS I got a rear Rockwell 2.5 ton rear and I am in the middle of installing it. This is not related to my oil question, I just had to brag.

How about using another oilpan with the dipstick in a different location? Maybe a van pan?

Go buy an issue of Street Rodder and surf the ads, there's a million different types of alternative dipsticks that those guys use. I know Lokar has flexible housings that might let you get it out of the way.

As for the dipstick, i would build a new tube from copper. If you design some weird gauge, it'll just break, and then you'll be stuck again...

But, please don't mount the dipstick inside the cab. Unless, of course you want a hot oil bath when you rollover, rover.

Oh, yeah, and i have Rockwells front AND rear. Sorry, just had to braggg.

<font color="yellow">Another point in having a dipstick vs a "level gauge"....You be able to spot any problems much quicker with a dipstick, your gauge wont tell you if theres water in the oil or if the oil has gas in it..etc. etc. ......I check mine once a week just because I baby it so much...

my Portuguese neighbor just got a new Mercedes that has the aformentioned "level gauge" ..... he was all like " whatta the fuck I cant check the oil on this ting???

Go to some local junk yard and find a timing cover with the dipstick on it. I have one on my 460. I think it should be in a early 70's car but, I'm not sure. Just do some hunting. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
